I went ahead and did it today. With the weather being nasty, and the low chances of finding chicks at the show (not to mention gas prices!), I picked up 10 peeps at TSC. 8 "asst red pullets", and 2 "pullets". Man they poop alot! they've been in there for an hour and already I feel like I need to clean it! 6 yo DD hasn't left the brooder's side since they got home. She asks me every 5 minutes if she can hold and pet them. I want to let her, but I don't want the chicks traumatized or sick from it. What can I tell her? How much can we play with them at this age?
darkbyrd, watch for pasty butt it is very common for the first couple of days. just make sure there is no poo cloggin up their little fuzzy butts.. as for holding them I can't say but i am sure others with young children can help you there. they are precious...
Thanks MissL, will do. When I was picking them up, one already was developing a pasty butt... had to let that one go back. DD is really gentle and sweet with the animals. Last spring there were more baby bunnies than she could hold all day!
BTW, I know these are not day-olds, I saw them in the store a few days ago. They all have the beginnings of wing feathers coming in, how old might they be? I'm not sure what temp to be shooting for, it's 94 under the lamp right now.
those that hatch will have to help you with the temp. my chickens hatch their own so I am never involved in that part of it. but I believe the first week is around 95* then 5 degrees lower every week after that. but hopefully some one will be able to help you with that.. I bet their still under a week old they grow feathers fast. I think it's best that your daughter only hold them a little at first because of size and the health of the chicks. Seems I read that it's not so good to hold them when that tiny. for very long anyway..
@suburbanchickymama-Fortunately Half of them are going out to a friends farm...She doesn't have the time to brood them so I'm doing it for her...I will only be left with 15+-
