Yeah, all the way to Holly Springs. Probably stop by a pet store in route and pick up a few small parrot toys for them in the brooder ( a few mirrors and bells may be fun right?). The thing I'm happy about though, is the chicks will be ready the 15th and the following week is Spring Break so we can actually enjoy them some (handle them, take care of poopy butt, and stuff). Though, now I worry about our planned trip to the Zoo over Spring break. Will the baby chickies be okay with mama human-hen gone? *lol* if they can survive a night alone at TSC, I'm sure they can survive a day here.

As far as getting silkies, wouldn't hurt to call and see if they have any available! *lol* I take it they are really good (Sumner that is), a person on-line at 4042.com recommended them to me and well as checking this place out.

When I was researching breeds of chickens (didn't know there were so many!), I was looking for a bird that wouldn't terrorize my family (my mom likes to talk about terrible chickens, especially roos from her childhood!). I have 2 special needs children and wanted something calm enough that they could pet and handle some. My ultimate goal is to learn some about them now, so that in 2 to 3 years when my son is old enough, he may participate in 4-H activities with birds of his own. I figure chickens are relatively cheap (compared to horses) and easier and more useful than goats. Sumner also has Speckled Sussex hatching at the same time as the Orps so I may add a few of those as well. Haven't fully decided tho.

As for a brooder, I think that comment has narrowed it down to either the old dog crate in the garage (I think it's a 30 inch) or I may just put one of my dogs in it and put the chicks in the crate that dog is currently using (36 inch crate).

I've been lurking and learning, so I decided get out of analysis paralysis and jump in.

Went to the feed store today after work but they are sold out of chicks until Monday. And they will only be Comets.

So we are making progress.
