North Carolina

My order of Mealworms arrived today. They do NOT come in the plastic bins. They come in a cloth sack that has crumpled newpaper in it. That is then put in a box to ship. Not the most sophisticated way to ship but it always works really well.

$21 plus $9.95 shipping for 5,000 medium size worms just ain't too bad. 2 days to get here VIA priority mail and there were practically ZERO dead. I got the bins ready this morning. They all buried themselves down in the bedding. If anyone wants Mealworms in bulk I can recommend Grubco.

2 small containers of mealworms are already in happy chicken crops. I keep some 2oz and 3oz containers beside the bins to put treats in and take out. They have good lids so that I can keep them in my pockets. If the birds see the containers they will surround me and not let me get anywhere.

I went to the last one at TSc just to look and there were chicks, roosters, hens, dogs, bunnies, pigeons, ducks, a turkey, and a real nice looking silkie roo. But I didnt pick him up to look at him as I have to many silkie roos now. O yeah there were a few game cocks and some baby goats as well. This one is at a pet store around the coner on main street. So I don't know what it'll be like.

Such a pretty bunch, I like the coloring of the one between the black chicks and the dud eggs. How do you know they were duds (newb here)? Were they not moving a little or are they way past due? I'm sure they stink, but have you ever cracked a partially formed dud? I don't plan on breeding, I'm hoping my pullets are hens (without the 1 in 10 chance of a roo) when I get them.

hoping they ALL hatch for you!!

All three eggs were 2 days past due, I cracked them and checked them. Just yolks & whites... never started to form, so most likely not fertile. They were test eggs for fertility anyways, so I knew there was a chance they wouldn't develop. Plus they were shipped eggs, and I got 5 out of 8, that is excellent!!!

Hi everyone! My name is Stacey, I am new to the forum and a total newbie to raising chickens (done A LOT of reading though). I am from Gold Hill and just bought my first chicks last week, 5 Buff Silkies

Nice to see lots of "chicken people" in NC, I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone.

I seen that you are in Albemarle. Mauney's Feed Mill on Hwy 52 in New London is having a chick sale on April 16th. The ad says they will have chicks and 7-10 week old pullets. I have never been to one of their chick sales so I am not sure if they have a good selection but the man I got my silkies from told me about it, then I seen the ad on craigslist for it. You can search "Mauney's Feed" on charlotte craigslist to see the ad. HTH

GoldHill...I will warn you...Gavin will tell you about the chicken disease, I was the most recent to be infected, but from what it sounds like...you might have it too!!

You've found a great group of people who are very knowledgable and overall, great people!! I am jealous that you have your chicks though...our coop is in the process of being built (just framed the 4 walls, roof being framed this weekend).

once you can...be sure to post pictures so you can feed all of our addiction. That and it helps make the chicken disease more manageable!!
