I just buried my 1st little chick.

It's the little blue Ameraucana I posted about awhile back that I've been worried about because it was so much smaller than the others. The size difference has been drastic for a couple of days and then today it was very lethargic. I seperated it to try and get it to eat and drink but she just passed. Poor little thing!! She was a real sweetie.

There is one other a bit smaller but not much. The others all seem great. I hope it wasn't something I did but if so I want to know so it doesn't happen again! Any advice for me????

there is something called failure to thrive that happens to young chicks and it's just something that happens and no ones fault.

I am so sorry for your loss SCM. I know you did all that you could to help the little one pull through. I am sorry you had to experience this though!!

Just HAD to share this with everyone. My mother-in-law called us yesterday to ask if she could buy us a sheep so she can get some wool - she spins her own yarn. So I said, "if you pay to have our entire yard fensed in to keep the varmits out & buy everything we will raise it and I will sheer it and send you the wool" my dh added, "you also have to either hire people to put the fense up or drive down here and help dig fence holes...if you come bring a hole poster"

they live in wi so we didn't think they would agree. His mother says "oh! Ok!!"

Terrible day...I have coccidiosis coming out of my ears!!! Well, not me. But all of the babies...there are about 40 of them. I lost 2 gorgeous young silkies today and I project tomorrow to be worse. I learned my lesson. I will never buy chicks again. From now on, it is me and my incubator only. Errrr...my poor babies. I hope your day was better!!!

SCM...G&A.... LDF sorry for your losses.

SCM...sometimes the chicks just can't thirve, it sucks but it is life. And I HATE it too....

LDL... I had cocci awhile back, I have only been hatching my own for months, so the only possiable way mine got it was from me bringing it in from my outside flock. It is everywhere, but the chicks need to build up an amunity to it. I treated with sulmet and it worked fast. I did lose several ...so sad.

NH... their is a sister site to BYC... can't remember the name but it will have info on sheep and other animals

I built a small coop today for my Seramas.... no smashed finger

Moved some birds around, moved some chicks outside and cleaned all the coops.

So I have 3 broodies at the moment, 2 more that can't make up their minds and 1 mama with 1 chick. Now I am running out of broody cages

I knew there was a good possibility of losing one but it was still heartbreaking. Thank you for the link, ML.

Wanted to add in something regarding the cocci - at least a couple of years ago it was spreading through the songbird population like crazy. We were trying really hard to spread the word to the public through local papers and newsgroups to try and encourage folks to sanitize their birdfeeders and birdbaths. It was crazy! The wildlife hospital was just exploding with birds infected. So that could be an alternate source, even if less likely.
