Good early early morning everyone!! I suspect most of you to be asleep but when you wake I have a tidbit of information for those of you closer to raleigh! Finally FINALLY after 3 phone calls & 4 emails I have some prices for those of you interested in Reedy Forks Farms Organic feed. He did not specify bag size (so I assume the standard 50# bag is the norm) anyway, the peices range from $22 for layer feed to 22.50 for broiler to 24.75 for starter feed. They do do custom orders as well as bulk discounts (not sure what qualifies as bulk though) and they deliver to the kmart on - oh poo I forgot where. I will have to repost later...its hard enough to type in the little light I have and on my phone...in the car... LOL!! That's all I can manage at the moment. Have a wonderful day everyone!!

Oh and

Please excuse any and all typing errors, grammar & spelling...remember 2 things 1) its 4am and 2) typing on a phone...

@New Homesteader - if that is for a 50lb bag, that isn't a bad price at all. Keep me posted.

We lost another chick/bird today. After the kids got home from school, as I was getting Serenity inside. Caleb runs around to the chicken pen and leaves the gate open! I later let my 2 dogs out, not knowing the pen was open. After about 30 minutes, I go to go outside and find the open gate. We are down to 10 birds, 5 Speckled Sussex and 5 Buff Orpingtons. I've looked around the yards and in the shady spots for it in case one of the dogs got her, but she is nowhere to be found. Secretly, I'm hoping for a miracle (she ran off to escape the dog and will later return), but I'm not holding my breath on it. I'll be picking up a lock for the gate today. So, well, that's the status so far on my flock.

Edit to add - Well, so much for hoping.

Found the bird this morning. I can't help but wonder, when I picked it up to toss it, rigor mortis had not set in. So I know it was a fresh kill. I can't help but think she had survived the night and when she heard us coming in and out of the house came home. Only to be caught by the dogs when we let them out for their morning constitutional. I hope she didn't suffer long. Lesson is learned though, I'll be picking up a pad lock for the coop while I'm out today. I did not want to do that though, but if I have to to keep Caleb from opening the gate to the pen, then that's what I have to do to protect the birds.

I have hatching updates.. I hatched 20/23 eggs Sun/Mon. Great hatch... I have decided to go back and stick with dry incubation, I did that in my homemade, but have been following the instruction that came with the cabinet. ( 50%) That is just too high here. I stopped putting water in the cabinet and it runs 28%-33%. Then at lockdown 55%-60%. Of course it raises as they hatch. I had 1 clear and 2 early quitter left in the hatcher Mon.

I have the next batch in the hatcher now....we will see.

last night 2 eggs left to go. I haven't candled so done know if they will
ONe of the chicks from yesterday is wanderer. He was wet and all over the coop when I got home. broody is a new layer and won't use the box so is on the floor. I didn't want to change anything while she was sitting. He was out of the coop in the corner of the pen the second time I checked and the thrid time after dark when i went out with a feed pan to move them into. he had to climb a 4 inch lip and drop down 8 inches to the ground! they wer still in this morning so the pan must be working.

Hooray for your broody!!!

I have 2 broodies sitting on nothing.

I refuse to let them hatch anymore yet this year... I doubt they've laid me more then 1 eggs each at this point.

Ok, for all you experienced hatcher's out there, I have a question. I am in the middle of a hatch of black copper marans and buff polish. There were 4 in my brooder that hatched yesterday morning 2 of each. This morning when I got up one of the marans had passed away and the other was gasping for air.
sad.png
the polish were just fine not a care in the world. So my question is: is it possible for the temp 95 to be too hot for the little black ones? Bc they were very warm to the touch and a lot fluffier than the polish. Last night they seemed fine and I couldn't find any other reason for them to have not made it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
