North Carolina

Matt, I am so sorry to hear about missing this rain! We got drenched and the kids are out in the puddles now (as well as the chickens are all muddy cooling off).

Bhep, I'm sorry to hear about your losses... its been terrible and like you I have to check the birds everyday several times. Luckily no losses, but they do look ill all day until the evening finally comes. I hope your horse picks up and gets hungry again.

I have no experience with horses, used to ride when I was 8 or 9 but not been around them since.

We have figs growing in our garden, when do you know they are ready to pick?

Umm... good question, depends on the type you have. I picked Celeste figs and they come ready now, they start to 'blush' to a purple and you pick them before they go brown. I think turkey figs actually have to turn more of the brown to be done. Their skins are tougher and have to be peeled, celeste are soft skin and you can eat the whole fig without peeling. There are many other types as well, but those 2 are the main types in the Southeastern US.

And before I forget... I took it somewhat easy today. I peeled a bag of pears my neighbor brought me to stick in the crockpot to make pear butter and hubby went out (not me) and harvested the grape vine. He's proud to show off the 15 lbs he was able to get off his vine this year. He knows I come to post about what we have going on, and wanted me to point out that this was his venture and he raised these grapes and cared for them himself!

I figured I'd post here since I'm in NC (Davie County/Mocksvile) and would like to know others nearby!

Tell him nice job on the grapes. Does he remember the variety?

My fig tree came from a twig off my Granny's tree. My husband ran over the poor thing twice the first Summer. We made a tomato cgae from regular fence wire. Finally the rabbits or whatever left it alone enough to grow. I pointed out tha I had picked a good spot to plant the fig: every bird in the neighborhood would land on the cage/fence, look around, poop, and take off again. Obviously the birds wanted the fig to do well, lol. That twig has grown taller thanthe one story garage in 15 years.

Needless to say, the fig tree got left at the old house when we moved in 2009. The twig I had rooted croaked on me. I need to run by and grab another.

Oh, our figs are the pop in the mouth variety. Can be peeled but not needed.

We finally got rain. My birds are playing in puddles. They splashed mud on me when I collected eggs awhile ago.

So what is he going to do with them now??

He's going to hand them over to the wife to make jelly and juice! HAHAHAHA

Its a wine variety grape, perhaps a zin. They are thick skinned and have seeds, so tough to eat like a table grape. They were bought by my neighbor years ago as a 'concord' but never produced for him so he gave us the vine in spring of 2010. They produced for us as green?! He thought maybe thompson since they were green, but unfortunately they are a thick skinned seeded variety. I however LOVE wine, and after some searches I do know they are a wine grape, my taste buds tell me most likely a zin.

But I'm guessing!
