Congrats on the new job! You guys will love it here! My husband and I have a small real estate firm in Downtown Cary - www.1stsignalrealy.com - if you're looking for a realtor! Different towns have different regulations. If you stay just outside of the city limits you'd be good to go. Some HOAs are ok with chickens, too. Let me know if you'd like me to refer you to one of our agents! Best of luck!!!!

Bhep - too funny! Love the names! LOVE True Blood, but no haven't read the books! The only books I've read the past couple years are pregnancy books - these babies have kept me too busy!!! But I've heard they're awesome and plan to one of these days!!!

Oh yes, stay away from HOA's!!! And stay away from CARY! **BLAH** No chickens or bees if you go that route.

Some HOA's look ok, but I hear so many nightmare stories when all is said and done, where they seem like a great thing... is wrecked my neighbors who follow the rules to the letter and watch you like hawks! Had a woman who I got to know at the beach one year, friend of the family and she is suing her HOA since they had her remove $20,000 in landscaping because the shrubs were not approved with the original plan! They threatened to take her house if she didn't comply! It's just scary! There are tons of gorgeous neighborhoods (especially in the down town areas) that are just fantastic though and no HOA or anything to get in the way. Of course there is a TON of gorgeous homes in the outskirts too... and in this economy they're a steal! Lisa may be a huge help.

We live in Fuquay and my husband works in Moorisville... so far, so good. I have to say, I like Holly Springs very much too. That was another area we were looking since we couldn't afford a single family home in Raleigh. We did enjoy Raleigh very much though, was just tired of condos.

Question for those who are NPIP certified. How did you go about getting certified? What are the requirements for nc? I have sent emails to several ncda offices and gotten zero responses... SOS??!!

You'll have to call instead of email. You can find the phone number to call on the NCDA website under the veterinary division. You call to set up your testing appointment, then they will send a state tester from Raleigh to your house. They will test all of your birds, then within a month you'll get your official NPIP test card in the mail.

Quote:
How old are your birds? I spoke with an NPIP tester at the last show, and have the number to my local tester. The birds have to be a year old before they are done, and some testers will only come out if there is a certain number of birds.

If you go to any of the shows this Fall, get there early and find the tester, he will help you out!

I have the email address for the one local to Surry County...He told he they had to be 4 months or older...but that all my birds have to be..which means some will be 8 or 9 months old when I can actually get it done. It costs 10 cent per bird or $5 for the whole flock. Really nice guy here is his email:[email protected]

he gave me his cell number too, but idk how he feels abt me posting it publicly so i won't.

Well....

Cat Update: The emaciated cat who I suspect is 6mo of age to a year (it's hard to tell when she is all skin and bones) has stayed around. She is VERY sweet and not interested in the chickens at all....BUT.... you guessed it. I am 90% sure she is pregnant. Once I started feeding her, her belly began to fill out but she is still skin and bones. Her teets are slightly swollen and I THOUGHT I felt some movement in her belly. I guess she could have a serious case of worms, but I worked for a vet in my earlier years, and have seen my share of pregnant cats...albeit, I have never seen one so young come in pregnant. Fortunately a co-worker of my DH works for a non-kill rescue group and she is in the process of finding a foster home for Tink (aka Tinkerbell - my niece named her). Until that time, we're getting a "hospital" kit from her (a dewormer, some medicated bath soap, etc...). Any of you out there have experience in "fattening" up a skin and bones animal? How she managed to live this long is beyond me for there really is nothing to her. I have been feeding her the same food I feed my own cats, but I have been adding a little water to it to make it softer - easier for her to eat?!? I will say I was a bad girl and refused to let her go to someone...they were going to have her declawed before they would officially adopt her. I couldn't put her through that...especially in her condition. If we don't find a good home for her in the near future, I will call and make an apt to have her fixed and a health screening before deciding to keep her or not. I have been viligent in washing my hands thoroughly after petting her just in case...my cats are up to date on their shots, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
Chicken Update: We are getting approximately 1 egg a day, sometimes 2 from my girls. I am happy to say that the eggs are no longer the size of bantam eggs and are growing a little!!

I am going to have to check my calculations and see when my Marans should be laying. They were born in March, so I am thinking their time might be coming up soon!!
Family Update: I thought I would share with you all some happy news, especially since I shared recently of our loss....but we will be adding a new "chick" to our family sometime in April!!

DD doesn't understand yet, but I am sure she will get the idea before all is said and done!! Have a great day everyone!!

For your kitty cat you could get this stuff called NutriCal - they make it for puppies and kittens. It's chock full of calories and helps fatten them up. It comes in a tube and they just lick it up and you should be able to find it at PetSmart or somewhere. Good luck with her!

Super jealous of all those eggs

I'm checking multiple times a day looking for my first one!!!!
