I am a lousy person to ask. My 4 black hens are all molting. The splash lady is laying, but JJ, Black Roo, moved in with one of the laying flocks till after show season. That flock is Jersey giants, so they are big enough to handle him, though he is molting too and has lost ALOT of weight. That means no eggs. I only hatched out 4 pure standard cochin chicks, 3 blacks and a blue. At 15 weeks the Blue is the only definate Roo and Smoke is looking really nice. Big Baby is kind of rooish, but is lacking wattles. As big as they are they still peep. Always very odd to hear a peep from a bird the size of the standard layer.

I am planning on keeping this till at least spring. My show line takes FOREVER to grow up. I guess if I want the best I have to wait for it.

Matt

Seems like the stars are not in line for my girl to be able to sit on some eggs. I tried to break her by taking all the eggs (non-fertil) but that girl is not giving up and is still sitting, but there is nothing to sit on. LOL. I would really like some good quality cochins eggs for her to sit on but that is going to have to wait until next year.

My one black cochin hen is not laying right now after trying to hatch twice this year with both hatches failing. The first batch of eggs nothing hatched and after 26 days I cracked them open and they were all dead chicks... so they were fertile but not sure why they didn't hatch. The second round there was no chicks in them so they might have not been fertile. My one black cochin roo is blind so it's hard for him to do his duty but he must have done it the first time or she wouldn't have had fertile eggs. Oh well, gotta keep trying :-)

I found a copperhead last night about 3 feet from our garage.

My husband who is terribly afraid of snakes was with me and got rid of him. Poor thing. I hate that! He was just being a snake, but he was WAY too close to where my little boy runs around and where my pups could get to him. Yikes!

michaelinnc84 - have you posted that you're looking for one on the yahoo thread? I emailed back and forth with a lady that had some a few months back but since she was too far it ended up not working out. Might be worth a shot!

Hope you're all having a great weekend!

Scm- Yikes! No copperheads here but last year we did have a HUGE rattle snake curled up next to our garage and the path to the front door. A friend noticed it as he and his wife were about to walk past it on their way in. I understand your sentiment about them not doing anything, but I also agree (more) with your following comment. I have three small children and they come first for me!

Anyone else have regular chicken swaps in their area? Our local TSC hosts one the first Saturday of every month and a local feed store hosts either the second or third, depending on their business schedule. I'm loving it, just curious if there are others,

Hi everyone,

Been recouping for a while. First the dog bite, then a very bad scare with my mother-in-law and then hurt at work again. My MIL was taken to the er at Womack and CTed, they told us 99% sure end stage pancreatic cancer and she would not be leaving the hospital. They would do a biopsy the next day to confirm. Turn out to be 6 stones in her bile duct (had her gall bladder out 5 yrs ago) removed the stone and said -Hey no cancer- rotten thing to do to a family. why say that if they haven't confirmed it! Then I got double barrel kicked across the room in to a brick wall by a horse on Thursday. No ER this time, but still very bruised on the legs and have to keep them elevated to keep the bruises from spreading.

I love all the gorgeous pics especially the little chicks. SCM thanks for the shots of the pullet. Looks like she is getting her sire's fluffy legs.

Doubletraining and michaelinnc84. I have 2 cochin pens right now, The first is my smooth blue roo with 2 black and 2 blue pullets. The blues haven't started laying yet and the blacks give 1 egg a day and seem to go broody regularly. The second has 2 smooth splash and 2 blues with a black frizzle cockerel. The cockerel is much younger then the hens and I hope he will catch up and start breeding soon. The first roo I had picked out flew at me one too many times in one day and he went away as I won't have an aggressive roo at my place. I hatch a few chicks at a time and right now have some but need a bit more time to figure out which are the cochins and which are the marans since they decided to start hatching 3 days early in the bator instead of the hatcher and got mixed up. The marans are blue with out many feathers on their legs and are hatching BBS like the cochins.
