I have all shapes & sizes together. It works here for me. Everyone knows their place.

The only birds that are separated are Peacocks & Pheasants, for obvious reasons. Now my young peachicks are and will grow up with the chickens. And I have been building pens to separate out my breeders so I can offer pure eggs.

SCM... your idea for a brooder box is perfect. I use them and regular dog crates. Keeps everyone safe & sound. Then as the chicks get a little bigger, you can open the door and mama can take the babes out for a stroll and they can go back in the box at night.

I have beautiful Gold Laced Polish that have not laid an egg in..... I don't know how long

Long enough for me to set their last 3 eggs they laid and to hatch them out last week.

BRATS!!! Also have Silver laced pair & a Buff laced pair....all just a smidge to young to lay.

Did I mention that broody is contagious ?

I have 8

. I just leave a dud egg or 2 under them, then switch the dud egg out for some egg that are just about to hatch.

She may be broody, which is most likely, or she may be uncomfortable with the cold. My silkies sleep in the nest boxes when the temp drops. It must be warmer in there. However, they go broody all the time... and sometimes if I touch them, they growl! LOL I did let them hatch last winter, and unfortunately 2 of the babies froze to death out in the coop. So keep that in mind before investing in eggs if you want them raised outside.

Sorry about the ill and lost pets. I always hate these parts. (waiting on my cats turn, she's 15 and has mammary cancer it looks like. Decided to keep her happy at home till that doesnt work no more and than say good bye

) Between the molting and cold, I think the only ones I got laying besides the bo and bs is a few silkies and someones got a fluffy butt on some of them eggs

vfem - Was it this early in the year when that happened? I don't want any frozen chickies!!! I can get some heat out to the coop if I need to though.

Bhep - do you think they all get along since yours are able to free range? Is it more dangerous since mine are confined to their run - even though it is pretty spacious I think?? Maybe I should stick to the Polish. I wish yours were laying! Does anyone else have Polish that are laying that you'd like to sell???

My new Polish isn't yet laying, but she doesn't seem to be integrating well into my flock...

Mine free range during the day and since bringing her home Monday, she will only leave the coop during the day if I force her out!

Any other hen I've acquired falls right into line within a couple of days. I have a REALLY nice rooster who takes good care of his girls, but this is the first Polish. I wonder if she needs more time?? She seems terrified of all of my other chickens and I haven't seen them pick on her at all...

Poor Janice.

Also, I think I am going to the Wicked Chicken auction Sunday looking for a goose for our gander...He keeps flying away then returning and I think he's probably looking for one.

I'm going to try to do a better job at observing any birds that I might get this time.

.....Unless someone else has a goose and THEY need a gander, then I've got a handsome one for you!!

Alllllllssssssssoooooooo,

I can't believe that I forgot to report that two of my pullets started laying this week!

As long as I've been waiting and enjoying my one laying hen, they both start in the same week (and nest!?)

They are both around 30 weeks old!
