BHep....I can't WAIT to see these little girls you are going to hatch for us!!

DH will take a little bit as he is still in shock over the vet bill when we took Lizzie in. (Although he was the one who said no matter the cost, we'll make it work and I will just work a bunch of overtime to cover it.

I don't think he expected to spend as much as he did!!

) I have slowly hinted that more chickens would help, especially since ALL of the ones we've free ranged are super good at putting themselves to bed at night (so long as DD and/or myself don't go out until he locks the coop back up). When they are out during the day, all I have to do is walk outside and they flock to me (or DD) and follow us around!!

LOVE IT!! As for Tink, we cannot bring her in the house for a few reasons, first because she no longer "belongs" to us...we handed her over to a rescue organization and we're only keeping her fed & looked after until she's put up for adoption. Secondly, Wesley (the remaining cat) will go through "issues" and possibly spray his disapproval!! I'm thinking DH wants a kitten some time around my birthday, but I think I might wait for Wesley to recover and then decide if he's ready!!

AND, I think my plan is to call Sumner-Byrd Farm as soon as they open this morning. They have Polish eggs on their website so I'm hoping theirs are cooperating more than yours, Bhep! I decided with it getting colder quickly and it being her first time I really don't want to wait around to get eggs shipped in (as tempting as it is!) so unless one of you close by has some eggs that is my plan! So looks like no auction after all, which sounds like that might not have been the best plan anyway!

Matt - make sure to take some pics! Poor girl! I had no idea they could molt so badly! The poor pictures for the worst molt contest are so sad yet funny! Poor little things!

Have a great day everyone!

Looks GREAT !!!

AND WHY DIDN"T I THINK OF SUMNER-BYRD !!!!

And that's my little EE girlfriend. She better not be taking lessons - she hasn't even laid a single egg yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But it's coming - in the nesting boxes checking them out all the time lately!

AND, I forgot to mention that the other girls are picking up Esme's slack! I got another egg yesterday! So I'm still at 1 a day, even now that Esme, the only one giving me an egg before, is holding out on me!

Good morning all!!!

All is well here. Our white silkie hen that laid her first egg last week has gone broody........ That was quick.........

It is official, we have entered our first poultry show. just spoke with Brian and entered our Splash hen in the show for next week in Morganton. So we will be bringing 2 roosters (Buff Orpington's to pass on to their new homes), Cupcake to show, and hopefully return home with some birds large and small..........

Have a great weekend all................

SCM: Nice job with the brooder! I used a dog crate lined with poultry netting and it worked great! As the birds got bigger, but not yet if enough to go outside, I put wood perches in, just slid them between the fencing. Worked great!

G&A: Congrats on entering your first show! I'm sure your gorgeous birds will knock 'em dead!!

Well, big day here! I moved the D'Uccles chicks out into the bantam pen, using an old dog house and fenced off a small section of outside so they can see the other birds but no one can attack yet. Although one of the Mille fleur Roos had a stand off at the fence with my blue Cochin hen. Boy, could he jump! Then my momma JB decided it was time to take the chicks outside for exploration time. Those little buggers are so small they run in and out of the fencing despite the chicken wire lining. DD was having a heart attack every time one went out. I had to send her in to calm down. Very cute to watch! DH spotted them first and came to get the rest of us to see them. What a nice way to start the morning!

Lookie lookie what I got today! My first blue egg!

So here's the deal with my broody - I went to Sumner-Byrd hoping to find some Polish hatching eggs. They stop doing hatching eggs this time of year because the eggs get too cold. He encouraged me to try a few chicks, but since she's so young and has only been broody a couple of days that made me too nervous. SOOO, he stole 3 eggs from a broody Silkie who's been sitting on them for 2 days! They were the only ones he had to offer. So that settles the Silkie debate for me!!!! He really thought that being raised by a broody (especially the one who happens to be the woman in charge) that they would be just fine!

Here's hoping!!! They were great. He wouldn't even let me pay for them. I did buy some big ol' duck eggs to do some yummy baking!!!! Lemon cream puffs and zuchinni bread already made!

Hope you're all having a good evening!

They should be just fine if she's the boss hen... she'll MAKE everyone accept the babies when the hatch and protect them good. Not much of a battle to get them intergrated with the rest of the flock.

Good choice on the silkies... *says the silkie junky*

P.s. - I got fertile duck eggs if you wanna try!
