North Carolina

I was just informed today that it is NC LAW... you can not free range your chickens without appropriate fencing on your property! If you are found to be free ranging without you can be fined or have your birds removed!!!!????

WHAT THE HECK!?

...and there are no leash laws where I live. So who does the state think it is?!

So cruddy news today. I went outside last night decided to do a random head count per usual. I counted 5+ times. I'm missing 3 birds!!! ***? (pardon the language) Automatically I grab my super high powered flashlight/shop light and go on a hunt. Looked in all the nooks and crannies in the garage, nope. Went outside walked their enclosure super slow looking for escape places or evidence of feathers or something. Nope, tight as a drum and no feathers/carnage. Then proceeded to walk the yard looking everywhere just incase. The chicken enclosure is surrounded by its own fence and the yard is surrounded by a 6 foot fence. No birds, no evidence of an escaped bird being scarfed down by my dog (because for sure if they actually made it into the yard they wouldn't last long. As soon as he got let out to potty he'd find them).
Soo... Today I'm racking my brains. I remember 2-3 days ago I noticed the latch on the outdoor enclosure gate wasn't turned and latched. I thought to myself "Wow, I must be stressed and going nuts because that's soo not like me to forget to latch the gate." I hate to say this because Im new in the neighborhood but I'm thinking one of the neighborhood preteens/teens might have stolen the birds. Im really just guessing but I know my outer gates don't have locks. Which I'm fixing that issue today. Here's the good news. My whole property is wired and under surveillance. The whole yard is covered by two different view points. The gates are also covered. So today I'm going to do another pass in daylight, see if I missed anything. Then sit down with some popcorn and a boatload of patience and start watching days and days worth of surveillance footage. I wish I would have noticed sooner because if it wasn't in the last three days Omgosh that's a lot of watching to do! Last head count I did was a week ago. Ugh! Wish me luck!
UH OH!!! if you need help you know I'm right now the street!
I played hooky and left work half day, came home, got the grow out pen finally useable.
Silkie babies outside in their own pen and only 6 barred/brahma mixes left inside! YAY ME!!!

In other news it's the second day in a row I've woken up to 3 eggs out of 5 chickens!

Just so they're not sleeping on the day-time roost anymore.

I live in the middle of the city and my chickens just hang out in the yard...... I'm hoping the dog fence will be enough to keep me from getting ticketed

I'm not sure on the specifics of the law, but a friend of mine got her inspection today and they gave her a heads up. You know who pushed for the law in the first place.... Tyson! They didn't want free ranging chickens to 'wonder' onto a facility they buy from and become a hazard for health with their birds. I don't know why I haven't heard of this until now! Its pretty recent. I don't fence mine, and I won't !

THUS THE FENCE I AM PUTTING UP TO CONTAIN MY 10 FREE RANGER CHICKENS, 20 DUCKS & 4 GEESE THAT LAY IN THE BUSHES ALL DAY. EVERYONE ELSE IS LOCKED UP IN BREEDING COOPS. SO I HAVE 8 1/2 ACRES AND MY CHICKENS ARE CONTAINED TO A FENCED AREA. IF i HAD THE $ I WOULD FENCE THE WHOLE DANG 8 1/2 ACRES. I MAY BE SPENDING MY INCOME TAX RETURN CHECK AND DO JUST THAT !!!!........

BTW... I put up a plain old 5 foot welded wire fence, using metal t-posts. Nothing fancy and I will NOT be covering it. If they fly over....OOOOooo well !

The only feed stores that I know of in Fayetteville is Family Farm and Southern Gin and Grain. They just sell. If you want one that makes, you gotta go to Benson, Mule City Feed.

Ugh I don't want to fence in my yard...I rent right now.

Wonder if I can talk my LL into taking it off the rent since it will stay here.....lmao

I have only been letting them out in the afternoon for 2-3hrs to run around. Wonder if I can get away with it since my neighbors don't care and I know all the law enforcement around here.....

Miss Lydia - I substitute various flours almost ALL the time in my bread machine recipes!! If you use Quinoa, Rice, Almond or Buckwheat flour (those are the ones I have used) do know that you will have a denser bread than traditional recipes yield. I tend to add a touch of Vital Wheat Gluten to the dough to help lighten it up a bit. Hope that helps!!
Thanks NH for the info. Vital Wheat Gluten? how much for A 21/2 LB LOAF? ALSO COULD I ADD SOME BREAD FLOUR TO TIS INSTEAD OF THE GLUTEN? LIKE HOW MUCH BREAD FLOUR WOULD I add, and how come I am in purple and large print like you when i didn't do anything?
