North Carolina

Thanks for having me! Im a newbie...sorta. This past year I have been battleing Breast Cancer and with chemo I could NOT eat store eggs anymore...needless to say a few weekends later we had chickens...love um! I am thinking of ordering some chicks from McMurray Hatchery. Anyone care to be my "mentor", lol. I dont want to take up alot of everyone elses time on here for my basic questions. Thanks for your time.

The 2012, I think that is right, broody count has already begun. Right now the count is 3.

Daisy Mama has been setting an empty nest for a couple weeks. She is a Standard Buff Orpington and raised a group of standard cochins last year.

Candy, bantam cochin, is also broody. She is only 8 months old and just finished her very first laying cycle. She is NOT on a nest. Instead she is perched on the front of the outside brooder making sure no one gets in. I have not been able to get their house ready, so Candy, Missy, Studly, and June sleep in there at night.

Scrunchy is number 3. She is a Bantam Cochin Frizzle Mix. She is hunkered down in the back of the box nest in the Standard Cochin house. That is house she sleeps in. I tried and tried, but never managed to get her to go with the bantams. She is a big girl and knows it. She is almost 14 months old. She spent 3 months broody last year, before finally breaking when she started molting last Fall.

Just for fun here is pest control waitng for a meal. Barbara:
and what happens after her meal and she knows what direction I am headed:
Trust me that belly is full. She is not very lady like.

ONE MORE picture for here - Creamette, a Blue Cream Light Brown Dutch, realizing Barbara didn't finish her meal:

Send some broody vibes this way... I have 4 so far. 3 are broody sister, so they count as 1. They are raising 3 chicks right now, then head over to doublea's place.

They share everything and 1 more bantam broody on 1 egg.

And LOVE Barbara..she is beautiful.

I'm new at this too and the people on here are GREAT!! I've found that they can help with most anything.

(Ahhh love the Pink!) I am looking to order 50 straight run of the Heavy Assorted. Do you recommend all the Coccidiosis and Marek's Disease vaccines they offer? What about the Broiler Booster? And the Gro-Gel Plus and Quik Chik? Are these little extras to make them money or are they a good idea to get?

Matt, give those girls some EGGS!!!

No chicks till April or late March. Anyways, none of the ladies are safe where they are. I mean safe from other hens pushing in to lay, which ends up breaking/cracking eggs. I incubate and give the hens the eggs 2 days before hatch. That won't happen for a little while longer. The only bantams I plan to set this year are Mottled Cochins from a friend in SC. The rest will be standards. A few standard cochins and I am buying some Comet chicks to give to Daisy in April if she is still broody. She is a proven adopter. I would like some eggs from a flock of good strong welsummers, but that is secondary to my plans.

The cocci vaccine is useless if you are going to use medicated feed, which most is. Marek's vaccine is a definate for chicks from a big hatchery. Broiler Booster is not needed unless you are getting broilers, which are not part of that assortment. The gro-gel and quik chik can be useful, but you can usually find in much cheaper locally. Check out any and all local feed stores to see what you can find. You may even find chicks cheaper.

Kristen, what are your goals with your chickens? Do you have a plan for the extra roosters? I have ordered from a large hatchery a few times but now get them from friends or locally. I'm sure we can "hook you up" Let us know what you are looking for, your goals, where Burnsville is....we'll get you ALL set up. LMAO

Speaking of getting birds, my Dad just finished his coop and is looking to get some hens. He is looking for a few eggs, bug control, but mostly for pure entertainment value so he isn't picky and doesn't want to spend a ton because he doesnt' want "pretty" ones like I have...he just wants chickens. LMAO If anyone in the Raleigh area wants to get rid of some culls or hens that are a little older please let me know.
