North Carolina

I love all the NC'rs here :) We're in Graham, Alamance County. Have 4 buff orpingtons (grown) and six 8 week old silkies! One of my silkies looks almost exactly like gavinandallisons black topped one :)

Newhomesteader, you make me very grateful my baby days are over! Not that I don't enjoy playing aunt and holding other people's little ones! I think my kids are afraid that when I'm a Grandma (long, long time from now!) I'll never give them back their kids. Little do they know, enjoying the baby and then handing it back is the best part!

And now, a drum roll please--

::::::::::: (those are drum rolls)

I got an email from the manager at Southern States in Mebane last night! It's official! They will be hosting our flock swap on Saturday, March 10th from nine to noon! I'm so excited!!!

Anyone who lives close, bring your birds or extra chicks or just come keep us company and take home some cookies or brownies! I'm really hoping this will be a nice success so we can have it again, maybe quarterly. Put it on your calenders, please!

I am right next to Mebane - not wanting to "dispose" of any of my family but would love to come look! How does a flock swap work?

If you like german dishes you should look up the recipie for getta, its an unholy unhealthy breakfast meat, but it is delicious!

I agree!! I think I have had spring fever since I was able to open my house up in the 60-80 degree weather days we've been having. Makes me want to get all the spring cleaning done and the gardens planted and finally...start working on locating someone with sheep closer to us to buy from!! LOL. Guess it's a good thing we're not "officially" in spring yet. I think that groundhog wasn't fully awake when he made his prediction this year!! LOL

On a fun note: my first batch of chicken stock is still cooking away!! How I LOVE stumbling upon old Amish recipes!! Found one for Fausnaught (which is a German style donut...and my heritage happens to be German & Native American...LOL how messed up is that??) so I am going to make some donuts (baked, not fried) for breakfast today. I am attempting to make them dairy free so the wee one and I can enjoy them...we'll see how that goes!! Usually when I do that, I get an epic failure!! LOL

I hope everyone survived the wind storm last night. We didn't get any rain, but we sure did get a LOT of wind!! Poor DH thought he fixed the coop door last weekend and it again blew off, so I think we're going to have to rebuild it from scratch...good thing we have an inner door with hardware cloth covering it, so my boys & girls are still safe from the wicked OPOSSUM and other nasty predators out there (nasty only because they harm chickens...even if they are doing what comes natural to them!!). We are planning on putting up our garden fencing today, complete with an electrical fence - we have so many deer, this is the only way we know of that will largely discourage them for the time being...Any hunters want to come and rid us of at least 10 deer?? LOL I know more will just replace them!! The electrical fence is also for the wild boar in the back woods as I am sure they would have NO problem finding a way into the garden and destroying it!! AHHH. Well "time to make the donuts"!! LOL

What part of the state are you in...and do you have a particular breed in mind? Meat or wool or combo? I no longer raise sheep, but I do still know a lot of sheep folk across the state. Perhaps I can help you in some way.

We are in Johnston County (I guess "close" to Raleigh). We had been looking into Friesians because we (believe it or not) want dairy sheep. Our daughter is highly allergic (I am allergic too, but can tolerate it better than she) to anything that comes from a cow or a goat. We've been ordering our sheep's milk from a co-op and the amount of money we pay each month for 4 gallons of milk (which she devours) we would recoup that in just a short amount of time if we had our own. Plus we could sell/"store" the lambs and I know that Friesians have some okay wool (which we would just give to my mother in law - she cards & spins her own wool/yarn when she can get wool). I found a gentleman (very nice guy) who was recommended to me by the BYH (backyard herd) forum who has Friesians, but he's 4+ hours from us and I haven't had a chance with the upcoming baby to really sit down and chat with him. We still have a lot of research to do regarding sheep - not sure if we have enough "pasture" as a portion of it would be wooded, unless we could convince the wonderful neighbors of ours to sell us the pasture next to us...but that's a whole other story!! LOL. Thanks for the offer to help though!! I may be PM'ing you in the future if/when we do get sheep then...with TONS of questions!! LOL...like HOW do I milk a sheep!! LOL

See - still much to learn before actually getting any!!

Had a LONG LONG LONG day today!! We were suppose to meet up with some friends, but they came down with the flu (BOOO)!! DH and I spent the day putting fencing up around our garden and making multiple trips to the supply store because we forgot this or that!! DD enjoyed the cool weather...she played in her sandbox most of the day...at least I know that I won't be the only one sleeping well tonight. HAHA. We came home to find our garden gated arch (not sure if that's what it's called...maybe a garden arbor??) - anyway our wrought iron garden arched gate that opens to our walkway...IN the driveway. Apparently the wind tried to pick it up and instead, bent the spikes that held it into the ground, so as it fell...it took with it my blackberry bush!! It was growing SO well too!!

Oh well. Guess we will just have to plant more again in the future!!

I seem to have a major problem on my hands. I posted some pics of my silkies in another thread - now completely convinced that I managed to get 6 cockrels. There is NO way I can keep all six with no hens. What do you do with little boy chickens that are going to grow into useless, noisy roosters? They're very sweet and really cute but at least 5 have to go. Anyone who is possibly interested, please email me and I'll send you pictures or you can come see them. chgothorp @ gmail.com
