Thanks for the tip on the .22, I just assumed rifles were for expensive. Luke- you are welcome to come target practice here!
I love dogs so much and it breaks my heart to think about killing them, but if they kill my chickens my feelings will change!

A Mossberg Plinkster is a good, but fairly cheap 22. Walmart did have a model for $120 or so. They seem to be reliable, have a 10 rd magazine, semi-auto, and they shot good and straight.

I also love dogs wild but I have a shot gun at the back door and a 22 at the front because I won't tolerate anything killing my animals on my property. [Thank God I haven't had to use either one]

x2

I had a guniea problem that lasted 5 years. they supposedly go "walk about" and can travel miles. I didn't have chickens when they first showed up years ago-- a flock of 18-- and scared the horse out of their minds for weeks. the colt finally thought it was fun to chase them and they would fly out of the paddocks. Put up with them until I got going with the chickens. At first they just passed through but last fall they started spending the night and roosting over the pens and pooping on my birds. By this time they were down to three birds. I managed to catch 2 of them and took them to WCA. the third just wasn't going to be caught in any of my many jurty-rigged traps. It met its demise by way of a freind with a BIG shot gun. Fencing them out doesn't work they fly well and think nothing of fences.
Well, I would hate to do it, but if it is them or my flock...

Vfem WOW!

Oh hey VFem! Quick garden question - when do you think it will be okay to plant flower bulbs?

If you are talking about summer bloomer, now is perfect! Even fall bloomers can go in now until August. Spring bloomers... tulips and such go in during the fall or they won't bloom this year.

What kind of chickens do you have? are you looking for anything?

Everyone: keep me posted on some full sized frizzles! I wanna get them and started before it gets too hot!
anyone know if the Sanford flock swap is still on?
I have 7 RIR and 2 Barred Rock, almost 3 weeks old and all straight run. I think I have a roo and hen BR but have no clue on the RIRs! Once I figure out what I have I'm going to be looking to get rid of excess roos and get more hens. These are my first chickens so I'm trying to figure it all out.

In late January I found a bag of mix(tulips, crocus, daffodils) that I had 'misplaced'(LOST). The crocus and daffodils are now blooming. Of course the bloom stalks are much shorter then normal, but I was surprised they bloomed. The tulips have sent up their early leaves. I am waiting to see if they bloom too.

I am pulling the spring planting bulbs out from under the house next week. I won't plant most till mid March, but I need to go through the sacks. I always wait till April to plant the Amaryllis bulbs. I should have about 15 of those this year if they made it through storage.

We have a .22 but if I were to choose one I'd go for a shot gun since you don't have to be real accurate to hit your target. We had a dog attack back in October and my DH hit it twice with a .22 and it went on to kill the neighbors pigs and 10 of her chickens while hopping around on 3 legs. Hope you're able to solve your problem without any losses to your flock
