Hey KristanB,

This might make you feel better too. From Henderson's Handy-Dandy Chicken Chart online re: silkies:

"hardy in heat & cold; because of fancy feathering, not suited for foul weather"

But, of course, if you're really worried about it and have the space and a tote, bring 'em in! Cheers!

Thanks for all the info...I "chickened out" to leave them in the cold....I put them in a tote in my dinning room. Rather be safe than sorry. They are already stressed from being in a new place. The weather will be btter by Wed

No, I dont know a J. Smiley.

And this coop is just their temp home till my DH gets the other coop finished....hes out in the cold now working on it. Luckily, I dont have to put him in a tote to keep him warm...lolo.

Their new coop will not have drafts.

Thanks yall!

Enjoying my silkies, never bother to bring them in and they do great! Spoiled brats to boot! :D

I've got the 8 x 12 brooding house cleaned out down to the ground. Step 1 is done!

When hubby gets home from his fishing trip, he'll remove all the tubs and the wheelbarrow I filled and empty them. (He doesn't know that yet!

) Then I can finish. Right now there's a large, full barrow in the way of the door. It turned into a lovely day to do outside stuff! And I'm glad hubby chose today to go fishing so I could work on it. He always wants to do the heavy stuff for me, partly because he's a nice guy

, and partly because it drives him nuts that I'm so slow. But I Like doing it and I'm more thorough than he is and I need the exercise, so I wait until he's gone to do such things. Then leave him the part I really can't do anymore, like move full wheelbarrows. So he's gonna come home, see what I've done, be both impressed and angry and empty my stuff into the compost. Then he will insist on "helping" with the rest of it.

Gotta love him. But the rest won't take long, and it'll be all ready for new chicks.

I've been seeing the term WCA thrown around. What is the WCA? And someone mentioned Winston. Clayton is too far for me, but I might could go to Winston if I'm off work that weekend.

I have another predicament. I need to build a hen coop with no supplies, very little money, and only a little ingenuity. I at first thought about building 3 tractors for my 15 chicks, but now I'm re-thinking that. The wife wants them to free-range, so probably a coop and run are in my future. Is this possible on a shoestring budget with no supplies whatsoever?

You are close to me then. I'm about 5 minutes from the Rowan county line. We live at the edgeof Davidson county. What breeds of chickens do you have? Do you have any other farm animals?

We have 7 Silver Laced Wyandotte chicks, 7 Americauna and 1 Red Sex Link. No other farm animals. We only have 2 1/4 acres with houses all around.

You might try looking on CL for pallets or shipping crates for free or small fee, they make great coops. might even find free fencing . you never know.

Hi everyone, finally trying to catch up after days of prepping for the show and then the show yesterday. We took a total of 13 birds and yes all had to be bathed and beautified.

Upon washing my handsome Biggie I realized he was not thru with his molt so decided to leave him at home and only take the one LF hen. I knew there were going to be some nice orps there but I made the show a "Special Meet" for the UOC so wanted to have at least one LF present. To my surprise my hen took Champion English!!!!

I was not expecting that at all but am extremely proud of her. There were 8 other LF orps and 16 total English birds in the class that she beat.
