North Carolina

The one showing all the symptoms is apx 2 from what I was told. Her sister is still active and only is showing the shaking head signs and occasional eye squinting. The other pair of hens are RIRs(1yr old) and they aren't showing any signs thank God! However they started to lose massive amounts of feathers 2 days after I got them. I have determined with the help of BYC that they are molting.. And are now finally growing their feathers back.

As for injectionsI don't know how or where to do injections. An frankly I'm not certain if I wouldn't cause more damage than good.

And yes I think the trigger to all of this was stress. :( which aparently is also a factor in MG.

So sorry to hear about your chicken troubles, Mouzekin! I'm sure the NPIP guys will help you figure out what to do--I have found ours to be most helpful. It's also really sad to hear that your first chicken experience was a bad one...and that you may have been bitten by a bad chicken guy. I hesitate to say it on a forum where I don't know everyone well, but I got bad vibes from the guy selling next to me at our last flock swap--don't worry, not it your area. He was pressure selling people, talking them into birds they clearly weren't sure they could handle of even knew if they wanted. That's not how I sell my birds, and to my mind not the way it should be done. Of course, maybe the gentleman who sold you these birds was the victim of misfortune in that his birds just picked up a bug at the swap, but I guess this situation brought to mind my own. It was kinda painful to watch.

Best of luck with your chickens--I will be rooting for them!

Well I had an unpleasant adventure tonight. One of my bantam hens had broken her hip and was limping really badly. Well I was hoping she would heal but it turned worse to the point she couldn't walk at all so I made the tough decision to put her down. :-(

I tried the old fashioned snap the neck thing... oh dear lord it did not work. I must have done something wrong or she was super hen. She played dead but I seen her breathing... so I went to pick her up and she jumped up and started cackling... so I had to try again.. and once again I thought I had dispatched her.. .I mean I was wringing her neck like no other.. I didn't want her to suffer so I was trying my best to do it quick... again she didn't die... so in a panic I ran in the house and got the axe... it finally did the job.

never again will I do the wringing of the neck method. It was horrible and the worst experience. I felt so bad.... GRR!

I'm sooo sorry :(

I love this site, truly I do.

This site is used EVERY DAY by people googling answers to their questions. I know this to be true....this is how I found my way here.

You all use a lot of abbreviations and fail to specify when you write above your problems. You are assuming that everyone is knowledgable about this hobby of yours. Some more specific info would generate additional interaction, and help those of us who are just now learning, etc.

Thank you! I'll be sure to update when I find out more myself. I'm sorry you had to deal with such an pushy vendor next to you. I hope that your easygoing attitude helped you in selling your birds. I always like to try to see the best in people, but this time I just can't. Especially after catching the guy in a lie twice while on the phone with him. 1. He said he always keeps his chickens off to the side away from everyone else, where in actuality he was right in the middle of everyone. 2. He has never had a chicken lose feather. While I suppose it's possible I find it highly unlikely, that if he has a large flock like he claims, he's never had any go through molting. To catch a person in a lie automatically makes me wonder what else he is hiding. Or maybe I'm just defensive and untrusting. I just hope I'm wrong!
