Hey everyone!

I am from Eden which is about 45 min north of Greensboro on the VA border. I've been scanning around this site to find a good source for me to increase my flock(if you can call 2 a flock lol) Seems like I am stuck in the middle. Everything is out in the mountains or way out east. If anyone is from my area or knows a good source around here please let me know. I am considering going to a poultry/livestock auction they have in Stokes, but it keeps loosing priority because I hate to drive out that ways and not get anything. Also, I commute to Asheboro for work so anything down that ways works too. Thanks!!!

We started with 3 about 8 months ago, and now are up to 45-50!! Beware of the chicken math, as well as the chicken addition disease, it is un-curable!!! Enjoy!!

IMHO, as a farm kid, to me it was the way the world worked. If the older folks didn't get very upset why would us kids? We understood that critters die (sometimes for dinner) sometimes bad stuff happens, they die and we go on with the day. This not saying that a person has to like it, but it happens. I think that the younger in life it happens the better for the child, JMO!  Also life lessons are all over a farm from plants to stay away from , critters to stay away from, what bugs might bite/sting, to where the good fishing worms are! Have fun with your kids and enjoy  the day!

I can totally see your opinion as valid and true, but I guess it also depends on the type of farm you have and how it is run. If your animals aren't ever ment to be on the dinner table and you grow attached to them as pets, I think it can be a hard thing to deal with. I personally have never lived on a farm or owned one, but my dad grew up on one and he has more than once told me his great, although sometimes gruesome, stories. Death on a farm is definately a more prominent fact of life that is for sure.

As for us personally, we only have a little house with a decent back yard, so I guess we are true to the site name, Backyardchicken...owners. LOL Our chickens are our pets, and as we have never had to deal with losing a pet before it was a bit of a trying experience all around. Me coming upon the chicken(and not knowing what to do), knowing it was my fault it happened and that my dog had done it, and having to explain what happened to the kids in away they would understand.

As unfortunate as it is, this incident has given me the opportunity to instill in my kids the fact that things like this happen. And even though they are pets in the fact that we have no plans on eating them and they have names, they are still just chickens ment for eggs so if something happens its not a huge deal, although it is sad that it happens. I'm glad they have learned this and are taking it so well.

On a lighter note, now how bout that chicken Math? Anyone wanna help me out with it?.. Currently I seem to be failing!

Isn't that the truth! I joined this site a few weeks ago with just a hand full of chickens and then I went to the Carolina Chickenstock....chicken addition caught on, brought babies home that weekend and again yesterday. My DH is becoming concerned.....hehehe.
