I can totally see your opinion as valid and true, but I guess it also depends on the type of farm you have and how it is run. If your animals aren't ever ment to be on the dinner table and you grow attached to them as pets, I think it can be a hard thing to deal with. I personally have never lived on a farm or owned one, but my dad grew up on one and he has more than once told me his great, although sometimes gruesome, stories. Death on a farm is definately a more prominent fact of life that is for sure.
As for us personally, we only have a little house with a decent back yard, so I guess we are true to the site name, Backyardchicken...owners. LOL Our chickens are our pets, and as we have never had to deal with losing a pet before it was a bit of a trying experience all around. Me coming upon the chicken(and not knowing what to do), knowing it was my fault it happened and that my dog had done it, and having to explain what happened to the kids in away they would understand.
As unfortunate as it is, this incident has given me the opportunity to instill in my kids the fact that things like this happen. And even though they are pets in the fact that we have no plans on eating them and they have names, they are still just chickens ment for eggs so if something happens its not a huge deal, although it is sad that it happens. I'm glad they have learned this and are taking it so well.
On a lighter note, now how bout that chicken Math?
Anyone wanna help me out with it?.. Currently I seem to be failing!
