Soooooo.....I have a question/survey to start off the day.

When I went to get the Langshan pair the seller claimed
they were 2 hens.
RF and I look over the first bird and agree it's a hen.
We look over the second bird and tell the seller this one
is a young roo. Of course the seller asks us why we think
this and we show her the saddle feathers starting to come in
and the hackle feathers that are starting to be pointy.
She says " No, it's a hen. Let me show you a trick an old man showed me.
He has had chickens for a long time."
While holding the bird around the body with the wings held against
the body, she flips the bird so it's head is pointing to the ground
and butt is up. When she does this the birds tail flips over so you
see vent and the bird spreads it's tail. She said that if the bird spreads
out/fans the tail, that means it's a hen. Of course this bird did exactly that
when she flips him over, spreads the tail out like a fan. "It's a hen" she says.
We again tell her all the roo characteristics it has to include the
pointy saddle feathers and hackles, how the tail does not split in the middle
like the hen and the large red comb and wattles means it's a roo.
I told her I'd still buy him but not at hen prices.

My question is have any of you heard of this tail spread trick to sex chickens?
Has it worked for you reliably ?

I have heard of that before, not sure if it works as I think all of mine 'fanned their tail feathers" (supposedly a hen protective instinct thing). Be interesting to see how it works out.

Happy Mother's Day to all!

Sorry.... Kristan. I have been having my own set of bad lucks. Had power out Wed. during hatching and another power outage last night during hatching my Mothers Day hatch.

I would try to treat with antibiotics.

Hollow I can do pure buff orps. Wont be many as I only have two hens, but I'll get you some

Lovely! Hopefully I'll have mine separated long enough to have a few too, but I only have a few buffs left myself.

Hubby says he'll have the exterior of the new henhouse finished today, hopefully. Then it's perches and nestboxes, food and water, and I can relocate chicken! Yay!

Son is visiting for Mom's Day...with his six-month-old Husky mix puppy. Dusty (the pup) has never seen a chicken. Son took him out to the fence and Dusty walked up, saw the birds, barked once and bolted.

After playing with my Boys for a while, he noticed that a couple birds had come out into the yard, and since just a couple were less intimidating, he went for a closer look. The chickens weren't sure about the strange dog, so moved away, which Dusty of course took as an invitation to chase.

Both hubby and son are fast on their feet, and while one hen did lose a mouthful of feathers, Dusty now understands that chickens are off limits. I wouldn't trust him alone out there with them, but he'll be okay off leash, with my son with him.

He mostly minds well, for a pup.

Life with chickens. It's never boring. The chickens know that our dogs do not bother them, and will come right up scratching around a dog lying in the grass with no issues. In fact, the chickens know they can chase our Boys, and the Boys will run! I'm rather surprised that this hen decided to run, but I'm pleased that she doesn't believe all dogs are like our Boys!

I have added the Apple Cider Vingear to ALL waterers...Which antibotics do you recommend and where can I get some on Sunday? TSC? And its a total of 2 more that are sick acting...holding their heads low and shaking their heads alot.

Mothers Day normally marks official planting day for me here in Boone, but since it is cold and rainy, I instead spent my morning in my pajamas in the coop, feeding treats to the little fuzzy butts. My next hatch goes into lockdown today. So hopefully new chicks will distract me from the garden, which is begging to be planted. Last year I broke down and planted early, only to have several things rot in the cold, wet soil. On a happy note, my kind neighbor surprised me yesterday by tiling a new garden spot for me! It all ready to go. He said having it between our 2 houses would help him "take care" of any garden pests, particularly the groundhog that already ate my spring carrots.

Sounds like a respiratory infection that is pretty bad. Open the beak/mouth and look way down at the trachea opening to see if there is on obstruction of mucus, infection, or lesion.

TSC should have Tylan 50. That is an injectable antibiotic. You will also need some small syringes with the smallest needles you can find. For a bantam do 0.5 CC just under the skin on the back or directly in a thick muscle. Under the skin is easier(which is what I do if needed), but muscle gets the antibiotics in their system a bit faster. 1CC for a standard. This is a little stronger then normal, but sounds like it is needed.
