I am downsizing.... I don't count chicks.

No OE hens.

I have eggs in the incubator. The BOEs don't stick around long.

OK, so I decided to attempt candling the eggs. Momma Hazel was nice and didn't try to peck me when I took her eggs from her. I used a large flashlight and attempted to see anything. I saw lots of speck in all the eggs. They were all left uncleaned when they were put under the broody so they have mud on them. I don't know if that made it more difficult to see anything or not. These eggs have been under the hen for a week now. Am I seeing the right thing? I have someone I could get day old chicks from if none of these develop but I really hope some of these are developing right. Hazel was a great mommy and took the eggs back too without pecking me. I put the eggs in the nest and she tucked them right back under herself. It was pretty neat!

She's here! She's here! My Cochin hen was waiting for me when I went out this morning! She was out in the woods where I would never want her to be, and seemed a little afraid, but otherwise she is fine!!! All is right in my world.

I'll be at the swap tomorrow. Bringing my Mixed-Up Orpingtons, and bringing home some of Beth's goodies. Gotta help her downsize!


I saw pictures of my dream chicken today. LF English Gold-laced Orpingtons. Oh. My. Gosh. All that color and big fluffy butts, too. Unfortunately, I'm not wanting to pay the price, so I guess I'll just have to drool from afar. Some kinda beautiful though, for sure.

I did a swap today and brought home a trio of lavender Orps. They seem darker than mine, but not a blue. Interesting. Especially since I may alter my plan once more (Who, me?) and sell all the lavenders. I'll wait until we move them all into the new house and pasture and see. It appears to me that the hawk(s) is/are targeting the lighter colored birds. If I am correct, then I'll need to either keep them penned or change to something less attractive to predators. I prefer free-ranging, so darker birds might be the ticket. But, I reserve final judgement until all the groups are out. Then I'll know. But, I swapped something I had no further use for, so all is well.

This trio is in quarentine for now, of course. All the younglings will get to move into new quarters first, and then the adults will follow. I want to dust these down well, too.

I candle eggs under the broodies for the same reason as Matt said, bad eggs will kill the rest and can cause flies to lay eggs and thus the hen sitting will end up with maggots. I candle at 7 and 14 days or when I remember.

I guess we are headed out to the Kenly Auction in the morning... so no Flock Swap for me

Hubby has been hard at work on a homemade, dorm refrigerator incubator...



He has added some plastic trays for the eggs to sit on...





Waiting for some eggs to hatch.... and then he will take the heating element out of one of the old "Little Giant" incubators and put it into the refrigerator... then add an old computer fan.... and we will be in business!

I am in trouble now..... aren't I??

On another note.... Alex... I candled your serama eggs tonight and they are all clear as a bell.... you are gonna have to put that roo in a pen with his girls. maybe they won't murder him.
