Good morning Everyone, and Happy Father's Day!

Another lovely day. I got hubby in a rumple last night, because when we got back from the banquet, I said I was changing and moving chickens. So much easier to do the adults at night, ya know. He insisted on helping.

That means I didn't get them dusted or anything, and they're in the wrong pen. He wants it (whatever "it" might be) done yesterday, while I am by default slow and methodical and do it all. I'm too slow for him. He's too slap-dash for me. But it sorts out. Tonight, I will go back and dust them, move the one set into the other side of the duplex, and I won't tell him until I'm done.

However, I finally have my B/B/S Orpingtons separated from the rest.

And my Buff Orps, too. That Buff roo will be leaving, but he can't leave for at least two weeks since I'll be gone, so I'm thinking to keep him a third and get Daddy one more batch of eggs before he goes away. But I'll be able to put the B/B/S Orp eggs in then too! Yay! I'd still like to get an outside Splash Orp roo, English preferred, but right now I have Handy the blue, and Magic the new young black, so I at least have roos!

I do have a question on bantams for you guys. Since I've only had them a few months, I still don't know a thing about them. Is there something they need that they may not be getting? The lemon-blue quit laying. The BBRs have dropped off tremendously. And yesterday the Crele didn't lay either, and she's usually clockwork. What might have stopped them laying? They've got layer crumble, have access to oyster shell, fresh water every morning...and evening if needed, fresh greens offered. What do they need that I'm not providing?

Happy Father's Day !

Hollow.... Bantams I are just like that....

no reason.

So..lost one more chicken last night. One of the hens was not put up in the coop. I WILL point my finger at DD. I was out there last night locking up all the birds and she counted & re counted the layer coop. I asked if she was sure and got a snotty.."I know how to count ! ". Really ! Evidently not ! So human error on this loss.

. Hard lesson learned. My ds6 was told to leave the babies alone. He showed off to a friend and dropped his bantam wcb polish. He struggled and slowly passed. I made him stand there with me to lay him to rest in the ground. This is the only chicken we have lost

and it was human error as well. Well we did lose two ducks... chicken hawk or some other fly predotor.

I bet she feels dreadful this morning. She is old enough to punish herself over it. And young enough to not want to admit it, too. But sorry you lost another hen to teach her to be more careful.

Thanks for the bantam info. All is well then.

I'm glad I went ahead and put the older birds in last night. The younger ones have barely ventured out of the coop since they've been there; just hanging out really close to the building. The older girls headed out into the pasture, and some of the older young ones followed. I just looked out and saw six BCMs chasing a grasshopper out there! I'm sure they'll go back in for the hot part of the day, but now they know it's okay to go out a bit. So maybe the girls will teach the other side when I move them! (Hubby would say that he planned it that way.)

Predator attack last night AGAIN!!! Lost 7 ducks and a pheasant.

**** Beth, we got up today and now another of our ducks is missing too! So my young pekin female & my only drake are now gone. I have one safely on a nest under my deck who won't budget and my muscovy who's been roosting in trees lately. Now I KNOW something is wrong. 4 days ago I shot a big black dog trying to dig into my cochin pen. Same black dog who got out last year and killed 3 of my banty cochins in the same pen I had to reinforce!

Problem is, I'm not finding any feathers or signs of attack in my yard or anyone directly around the pond.

I am flaming as I can't hatch any more ducklings now, and 2 are too few for us to have left. I just spent 10 weeks raising the last one before I released her. (Which she was coming back to the pen everynight until she disappeared.)

I need a gun that can actually do some damage I think!
