I hear ya scottcady,

I think that the health of the chickens could be at risk if too many are in one area. I like for my ladies to have plenty of room to roam and graze/scratch. I have lost count a while back! I love raising them, but like I said they need room....

I can turn out some to give them space, but the younger ones I get worried about more because they don't know the dangers of predators.

Can a chicken person have tooooo many?

If so, I just might have a few too many

I will not count the birds!! I will not count the birds, I seen/heard of people count birds and get in some kinda bind and then sell off good birds.
Good luck with your chicken math

Be patient, and watch out for the spike in temp when they are about half way or more. (IF incubating)! I try to get the boys to help with the count, but.....????

The hubby has been nice enough to enable my habit by building coops, but

I thought he'd freak when I was hatching, and went out and brought back bantams that the boys picked out, and some off of the conservatory list that I picked out.

It was only 14 more birds to go with the 30 that were hatching.

He did not say a word!

I'm looking for sources (for future restocking) for B/B/S English Orpingtons and Dark Brahmas. I want them NPIP, too. I'd prefer buying chicks (probably in the spring) but would settle for eggs. And I'd like to find more than one breeder for each of them, so I can get different bloodlines to play with. I'd be thrilled with exhibition stock.

The rest of the birds I'm going to get are just going to be layers for the most part, and I'm going to get assorted breeds from hatchery stock. Easter Eggers, some dark layers and some pretty birds to go with them. But for breeding, I want the EO and the DB.

Was admiring the patterning on the turkey poults today, too. They are lovely birds. Hope we can save them all!

Let me know if you know any sources for the birds I want, please. I'd like to contact breeders as soon as I can project a restocking timeline.

I have dark brahma Hollow, just let me know when your ready next year and I'll hatch some out for you :)

Good Morning Everyone!! It definitely feels good to be back! DD1 went to bed last night around 6pm and didn't wake up until 9am!! AHHH...talk about a NICE reprieve...I cannot say the same about DD2. Young ones just do NOT travel well and do NOT adjust to their schedules being messed with!! I think I have come to the conclusion that I am a week off base when it comes to when my chicks are suppose to hatch. Next time, I will remember to date the eggs!! This mama is NOT a sweet broody, so I didn't do much in the way with her...I let the experienced handlers do it. Hehe. Now...we just wait.
Matt - thank you for the advice. She is a NASTY broody, so rather than candle and mess with her, I am just going to keep my fingers crossed and hope that I was in fact a week off (which is VERY probable). One of these days...I may actually try to candle!!

By the way: I plan to mark the eggs that our newest broody is sitting on, so we'll have at least a rough idea when they should hatch!!

Awesome! If Gavin & Allison also have them, that will give me two sources for those.

Got pics?

The dark variety is harder to find, I've discovered.
Gavin got his from me, and he only has a few girls I think, no boys...

I don't have any recent pictures, right now they are ragged anyway, and starting to molt...These are when most were about 8-10 months old. Some are Ideal hatchery stock, some are exhibition BQ birds the Ideal birds are just as nice as the BQ birds surprisingly, and I am hoping to get some more exhibition line birds from another guy in NC this fall to improve my birds.

Thanks for the pics, SOS. Lovely birds, aren't they? If you got some from Ideal and then up-bred them, I may get some from you and some more from Ideal, and then search out a third source.
Lukescityhens, if you recall your source, and they are NPIP, please do send me info on them!

Now that I'm back at work for the school year, I'm having to explain to all my colleagues who buy eggs from me why I don't have any and won't until likely next fall! Ugh. I have some seriously disappointed people. Hubby is dealing with the same thing at his work. Sigh. And I was upsizing the flock to be able to fill all the egg buyers requests.
