x2!!r rancher![]()
New chicken rancher reporting in from Raleigh!
Coop is still under construction:
![]()
We got 5 chicks about 12 days ago. They are now 22 days old and growing FAST! Time to finish that coop!

We've got two Ameraucanas ("Flash" and "Penny"), two blue laced Wyandottes ("Lacy" and "Minnie"), and one Buff Orpington ("Little Miss Sunshine").
When I first got the idea to get chickens years ago, it was a novel and kind of revolutionary idea. Now it's almost a cliche in our neighborhood, and many early adopters have given it up. I knew I wanted to be in for the long haul, so I have taken years to do my research (thanks to all of you! I've been reading BYC like crazy!), waited through various setbacks, and finally plunged in and promised my kids we'd have chickens before the year was out. I'm just as thrilled by this as my kids.
What great entertainment these little birds have provided. We've been catching crickets in a trap overnight some nights and letting them loose into the chicks' box en masse in the morning. What a scene! Even more entertaining when we throw in a handful of moths too! The prize this morning was a huge katydid. It took them 10 minutes to finish that thing off!
