North Carolina

Good Morning, Everyone!

No call from the PO yet. I'm ready and waiting. Not going in to work today. Last time I ordered chicks the stupid people at the PO kept them half the day because they were "cute". They even pried up a corner of the box to look at them. Didn't cross their little pea brains that those chicks might like food and water! If I don't hear anything before they officially open and will answer the phone, I'll call down there then.

Thanks for checking on calf possibilities, CSB. I have feelers out elsewhere, too. Hopefully I can pick up a pair somewhere.

Looks like a lovely weekend. Hubby has to go to Raleigh after work, so I"ll have a long day...to myself! Planning on cleaning out another henhouse. I want to get them all re-cleaned, and this looks like the perfect weekend for it. So one today, and the others tomorrow and Sunday. Another bleaching while they're empty won't hurt them, either. Scrub, scrub, scrub! Everything starts fresh and clean.

I think we'll also need to re-fence the garden. We just have chicken wire around it, because the chicken moat around the garden had heavier fencing on the pasture side. But hubby let the sheep into the moat to get the plants that have come up since there's no chickens. When they ate those plants, they decided they wanted the garden plants, too, and tore down the fence to get them.

Have a good day, everyone!

The PO lady looked alittle scared of them to be honest

I can tell you this...those 1 ton chicks may just eat the others in the hutch. One big rooster is already harassing the ladies !!!

BIG weekend for us!! Please say extra prayers for us as we are attempting to purchase the land around us from the farmer who no longer farms!! If we can get the 20 acres, we'll be a FULLY FLEDGED FARM!! We'll be looking at purchasing: a Jersey cow (for milk & cheese), a beef (probably angus??) steer/calf, 2 nubian (??) goats (for cheese) and 4 sheep (for DD's milk & my MIL's wool). DH also said that we would NEED (his words not mine) more chickens and add some turkeys to the mix. His goal is for us to be completely self-sufficient by the end of next year!!

Of course that all rides on whether or not we can get the land and then find the right livestock!! Can any of you actually SEE me running a farm? I'm still learning how to not be afraid of hurting my chickens when I go to catch them (even if I am catching them to process them...LOL) I am still a city girl with dreams of being a country girl (and secretly dreams of not being afraid of getting hurt by the livestock or worse...encountering a spider). <sigh> I guess DH has more faith in me than I do. So if any of you know of people that are constantly selling cows, goats and sheep...please let me know!! I think I just might faint!! I am off to bake cookies - cookies are a good negotiation tool, right?? LOL

Have a great day everyone...it's FRIDAY!!

Can't wait to see photos of some highly anticipated chicks arriving today!!

I picked these up from these up from the PO a bit ago!! One dead and 55 live chicks.

Got them set up, and they were pleased to get shown the water. I didn't have to show them the food...they were on it fast!

Just another shot of lovely chickies!

What a cute little EE!

Obviously I didn't take time to edit pics...or even turn them. There are RIR pullets, EE pullets, Welsummer and GL Wyandottes with a couple roos for each of them. Welp marks the boys, which is pretty nice of them. I'm pretty sure the dead one was a Welsummer pullet, but we'll see as they grow.

When I got them home, hubby was about ready to leave for work. He stayed while I checked them, and grinned and said the place was complete again.

I am happy again. Sigh.

I've got all my crossables crossed for you to get that land! Hubby was a city boy until I got him out here. He'll never go back. If I hadn't gotten sick, we'd have a set-up similar to your description, except we'd have two cows...one who'll take foster calves to raise. Then she can raise the offspring of both of them for meat, whilst I milked the other. (That's how my folks did it and it worked nicely.)

I do know where you can get sheep next summer. I know several sheep folk with different breeds, but you may prefer Frisians for milk. I can put out feelers for those. Goats are everywhere. For both of those species, make sure you get CAE free...tested free...stock. That's a nasty disease, and it's common. Better to spend a touch more and get clean animals, no matter what breed you decide on. I wouldn't buy at an auction for those, as you want them to produce food for your family.

If you aren't familiar with the NC Agricultural Review, google it now and check it out, including the ads.

You're going to be just fine!
