North Carolina

ohhh DARN! I finally talked the GF into letting me have a few breeding pens at my roommates tow shop and I really want sweds and brahmas. So pencil me in for some babies!!!!

and it might be Moonshine! HAHAHAHA if you couldn't tell by the joyous look on my face

Will do ...

The babies are getting their feathers in on their wings or "armpits" as my 7yo daughter would say.

I'll need to take a few more pictures and see if you guys recognize any of the 'unnamed' breeds.

Anyone have thoughts on straw/hay? There is another thread about "experimental" bedding, where someone bought Lucern High Fiber Gold chopped hay (w/ no molasses) ~ mixed with oil. Claims to keep the dust down to almost 0 and smells great - even after 3-4 months.

I can't find anyone that sells it around here ~ I wonder if I lightly spray it down with oil (maybe even infuse it with something, maybe lavender) if that would have the same effect???

I know there are products that I have seen at TSC for deodorizing coops and compost, but I can't say it works any better than just cleaning it out. The bottoms in each of our boxes are removable to make cleaning better, and we just use food grade wheat bales... then sprinkle with DE. I think our coop would not be the best example... there are a lot of pooping birds roosting in there at night, and I don't think I would want to go that long between cleaning. Ours has a drain at one end to hose/wash everything out to start with fresh after it dries up. We use low-dust pine shavings in brooder boxes, and another coop. A light mist is good to keep dust down as long as the bedding does not stay wet. I even mist the birds and tree canopy when it is too hot out. It helps them preen feathers. We leave it dry in some areas for dust baths. I do think that many on here have unique set ups, and they may all have some information that will be helpful.

Anyone else have an experience to share that may help?

SO helpful! We have a poop board with Sweet PDZ in it ~ we use a cat litter scoop to clean the poo. On the floor we have regular bales of hay scattered. Dust seems to be my problem. Thing I hate more than anything, is breathing it in and cleaning out (TMI ALERT) my nasty nose debris

just a FYI........anyone in the Fayetteville area looking for straw

the plant place on Raeford road near the Montclair subdivision
has put out pallets of straw and it is free for the pick-up.....
it is what they had used to display the pumpkins they were selling
and the pallets are towards the back of the parking lot on the side.

I got them too here in wilmington all my girls are ok and doing well..Including the one that had the foamy eye she has responded well to yogurt and electrolytes also have been cooking the some eggs for protein
Glad to hear your girls are doing well. I am not sure if we actually had the pox or not. No one else came down with the weird spots and just my 2 buffs had the spots on their combs. One was the rooster and I suppose it could have been from asserting his dominance over the youngsters ... the other is the alpha hen, so I guess the same could be said for her. Not really sure, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it was a fluke!!

Hope your girls continue to do well!!

Thank you all for the input.
Hollow~ I'm leaning more towards a rifle or shotgun, since, from what I've been able to find, they are cheaper. But if he has some info on pistols I'd love to hear it.
I must admit I'm slightly afraid to handle guns.
Luke~ I got me a real nice pellet gun, it works great for detering coons and possums. but after seeing the fox, if I have to shoot I want to kill and not have it suffer.
Random new~
Did ya'll know that 35 states, so far, have petitioned to secede from US. And north carolina is among the list. You can go to www.whitehouse.gov/petition
To find out more. This is so unreal.
Haha...I just saw that NC is up to 17,000 signatures. Texas already had close to 70,000...will be interesting to see what the "official" statement is re: the issue as I doubt anything can come of it...then again, there have been states to secede before without "permission" from the government oh...250 years ago or so...then again government back then wasn't as big as it is now. LOL I did tell a friend that NC was on the list and if we successfully seceded that I wanted to be made queen...she actually responded, "Really, you can do that? Wow!" I shook my head in utter disgust of how little people know.

Good morning folks

It seems that the weather is in the cool-down mode
and I just know I'm going to be cold and can't get
warm. Guess I better go buy some socks for
wearing to bed as that will be the only way my
feet will ever feel warm.......and the DH will let me
into the bed......can't blame him for not liking the
ice cube effect in the middle of the night

hope your day is a warm one

Good morning everyone...it's Wednesday which means the weekend is just around the corner!!

Coop - I have given up on being warm and DH just laughs at me when I wear socks to bed to keep my icicles from freezing the bed!! LOL

Baking day for me...or sewing...not sure which. It SHOULD be sewing as I still have Christmas dresses to make, but the pattern is from hades and I really do just want to throw everything into the fireplace and watch it burn...

Maybe I will bake WHILE I am sewing so I can have a 10 minute break every 10 minutes...hehe. Have a great day everyone!!

(I have some news to share....soon - I'll leave you all hanging with that!! LOL)
