NORTH CENTRAL FLA "BYC" SWAP (UPDATES) post #1/JAN.16th/Dunnellon, Fl.

Here's the 8-10 week old blue silkie I'm bringing to trade or sell, cheap, and sex is unknown... Has excellent feet feathering and great toes, looking like it will be a very nice bird.

I will have more cages. I'm experimenting on sizes and designs. Suggestions are welcomed. I will post some pictures. Hopefully this will be a successful Swap Meet. If we do have a good turnout we will probably have more Swaps in the future.

Guess what!?! I went to school today and was talking about the swap on the 16th. The 4H mom from my son's elementary school is coming with me to it and is all excited about it. I work at the high school and the Ag teacher came to me and asked if I knew where to get some chicks. I did a little dance and told her that I am going to a chicken swap on the 16th. So it looks like I'm looking for chickens for both our elementary school 4H and our high school ag as we are going to add chickens to our high school ag program.

A little info:
I currently teach at Umatilla High School, in northern Lake County. We are a high poverty school, with lots of kids on free and reduced lunch. The ag program has always been very strong at the school. The emphasis used to be on beef, but we now have newer teachers who want to expand the program. The teacher expressed to me that she is looking for some chicks that will grow into laying hens. The eggs collected from the chicks will be given to the students to supplement their diets. She is trying to teach self-sustainability, and in addition to chickens she is teaching gardening and things like that. I asked if she was interested in meat birds, and at this time they are just looking for layers. I also asked if she was interested in doing breeding programs, explaining the cool things that can be done with colors, tufts, rumps, feathering. While she is excited about those prospects, at this point she is just looking to get her feet wet and grow some chickens. She is going to build a brooder with the students and they will raise them out.

In case you can't tell, I love chickens. I used to have Seramas, Silkies, Cochins and true Araucana. While I am currently teaching algebra, my training is in science. I am an entomologist, with training in mites. (Weird, I know.) So I love chickens. AND now I get to infect students with that love!

WHOOP! WHOOP!

(Man, I really need to lay off the chocolate covered coffee beans. I am way too excited!)
