North Dakotans UNITE!

Some of the Ameracauna are pretty close to blue, the EEs are pretty much green, one that I hatched here I think was a cross between an EE and a Cuckoo Marans, and hers are the most disgusting olivish/grayish... They make me laugh every time I find one!
That is so cool... I am taking notes! I imagine the colors stay pretty true to the easter egger breeds? Or can the color vary a lot bird by bird?

Hahaha, that's cute.

With easter eggers, color does vary. They are crosses with other breeds so there are different shades of green and some lay brown eggs. With Aracauna and Ameracauna you won't get brown eggs, they are more blue or greenish blue. A lot of hatcheries pass off their easter eggers as Aracauna or Ameracauna (which are actual breeds and recognized by the APA). Easter eggers can be beautiful birds and lay some really neat eggs but they are not a breed, they are a cross breed with who knows what in the gene pool.

Aracauna are harder to find than Ameraucana, and from what I understand harder to breed (there is some kind of lethal gene?). I think they are also not as hardy and might not be able to handle our climate.

If you dig in BYC, you will also find at least one thread on Olive Eggers. They get some pretty neat looking eggs!

Hi All!
Yay! A ND Thread!

I'm new here and need some help. I tried mail order chicks and only one survived the shipping

Frosty, if you are ever breeding or selling any of your americaunas blue layers, or even selling the fertile eggs, I would be interested in some. I have 2, but the one that lays the blue eggs just doesn't lay much. In fact I cannot remember any eggs from her all winter. It makes me sad, because she is gorgeous, and sweet and I really would love more of them!

Oh boy! You could fulfill some of my dream chicken spots! Can you message me your info? I will have to plan a trip out your way. Do you ever do eggs? I volunteer with a preschool looking to hatch some eggs as part of their "farm" unit so I have been trying to hunt down some eggs to give them too.

Are your Ameraucana from a hatchery or a breeder? I don't know when I'll be out that way, but I might be looking for a rooster...

JenNDchicks, I am super interested! I too would like to know more about where your stock came from.... With the hatch happening at the school, I was hoping to match up some day olds to go in the brooder with them. Right now we are planning the 2nd week of April. Do you think you would have some available then? You have quite a few breeds I am interested in, and I really would rather buy locally than from online.
