You want fertile eggs now? Or next spring?

I bought eggs from a lady here in Homer. She has Ameracaunas BBS and Black Copper Marans. Her Black Copper rooster died a month or so ago, and she now has a young replacement. Point being, i am not sure if the young Marans rooster is fertile yet, and they are all run together right now.

If you want her number i could look it up for you.

I was looking for some now, but think we will wait now until the spring. thanks for the information.

I think she got her Marans and Ameracaunas from a lady in the Sterling area.

I am planning on ordering from Duane Urch in the spring, if you wanted to add to my order (or anyone else who was willing to drive all the way to Homer for chicks).

Though actually.......I guess if someone else was set up for it with an Anchorage address, there would be less risk of chick death if someone in Anchorage could pick up the chicks, and feed them all for the first few days, and then I would be very happy to drive up and pick up mine.

Anyone interested in doing that?

This may be a silly question but I am setting up for winter and was wondering at what temperature do you all turn on the heat lamp?
I will have a:
regular light
Heat lamp
Some sort of water heater
Use shavings on the coop floor

Am I missing anything?

I don't think you need any heat in Wasilla.



And i don't always use a light. I let them have a month or two of darkness, and greatly reduced laying, and then start to turn the light on. I think it is good, and keeps them healthier, if they have a laying break. For the super organized types you could get them to have a break from laying during the coldest part of the year, so all energy go towards keeping warm.

My big problem is the water. Keeping the water unfrozen is a royal pain for me. And all resulting water mess issues, ug!
