Norwegian Jaerhon

Pics
Woke up this morning to my two Silky pullets crowing

Hatchery stock, 99% chance of being pullets - and my two turned out to be roos and so did my daughters. Should have figured it out - those two have been the meanest out of my whole flock. Onto Craigslist they go.

That's one reason I love my light Norwegian Jaerhons, you know what you've got right away. And the cockerals don't even annoy me...it's fun to watch them crow. They muster up all the energy they have and do their best to crow, but it's really not a loud or annoying crow - not yet anyway. Even my DH said he wouldn't mind keeping our little cockerals around, they are so friendly and entertaining

Mine haven't started crowing yet, I hope they're not too loud when they do. My neighbors like my chickens so far I hope that never changes! So far these little guys are charming, inquisitive and very tame.

Anybody have any stories of how these birds have done well free ranging?

Yes, I free range mine on 15 acres, but there coop is right next to the house so they stay pretty close. Zero predator issues thus far. Also helps to have a St. Bernard they like to roost on

I've got to get a pic!

Yes, discoveregg, picture please!

Last night I heard a weird noise while tucking in the birds. I thought it was a mouse or maybe one of the outdoor kittens. Upon further inspection it was one of my 8-wk Jaerhons trying to crow! All he can do is squeak! Need to get that on video.

This is a picture I wanted to share with ya'll it's NOT from my birds I found it on a Norwegian website and thought he was a good looking fella, Since most of my cockerals have similar colors, this is going to be the model I'm breeding for since there's not an APA standard yet...

Roosterfry, that is a beautiful rooster. I am looking for one like that.

discoveregg, I would love to have one of your roos. The only problem is that I have dark Jaerhons and yours are light.

Has anyone crossed the light and dark varieties? What would the chicks be like? I like the darks better and want to produce good examples of that variety, but can't find a rooster at this time. I can order chicks from one of the hatcheries in the spring, but when I look at the ads from the hatcheries the variety they sell is not listed. I may have to wait until spring and order some hatching eggs even though that will put me a whole year behind. My pretty little hens are now laying nice large eggs and I would love to hatch some eggs in the spring.

Hey guys, I've been doing some more translating from Norwegian to English, this is in an article I found, it is from a unknown author to me. I fixed some of the bloopers this time as much as I can, (no racist chickens this time

) but I still consider this to be a rough translation. Enjoy!

Norwegian Jærhøns is a light and lively breed. It is a Norwegian land race that is bred in Jæren, and it is the only Norwegian breed we have. It is a very good egg laying breed. They are hardy and frugal and good at finding food. They are approved in two colors: yellow - brown and brown - yellow. We often say, respectively, "light" and "dark" their are Norwegian Dwarf Jærhøns bred by breeders in Østfold, which we here in the county is very proud:) These are the same color varieties as they really grow. What's special about Norwegian Jærhøns, is that both colors, have sex-link characteristics. The light version provides almost solid yellow rooster chicks while the hen chickens are yellow with distinct dark stripes on the neck and down her back. The dark variant gives dark brown chicks with cock chicks have a major bleed yellow spot in the neck while the stain of hen chickens are considerably smaller.
