Just out of curiousity I did some checking on the requirements for a new breed to be recognized by the APA. I can see why many breeds are not recognized due to the number of birds necessary at the show to qualify. However,we think it is a great breed and we want it to grow in numbers and number of breeders. I think recognition by the APA would be good for the breed. I am not into showing but I would do it for the breed. When I start a new project I always remind myself that you only have to do one step at a time. So the main thing we have to work on now is: at least 5 people to breed and raise Jaers for 5 years. That 's not hard as we already want to breed and raise Jaers. We also need to develop an American Standard of Perfection based on the one we already have from Norway then our Jaers will continue to look like Jaers and not wander off into something different. Any body interested in forming a club and on working a SOP?

I think a club and SOP is a fantastic idea. We have a Penedesenca club and some members would like to work toward APA inclusion too.
I think establishing a US standard early and adhering as closely as possible to European standards is critical before a hodgepodge of characteristics emerge.
To that end, I translated all the standards for Penes I could find to get that on paper as early as possible so everyone could have that in front of them as they work on their birds.
If I'm not mistaken, some contributors to this thread are Norwegian and could do the same for Jaers.
I may be interested too but right now I only have hens. I sold my roo and other hens to a friend so I'll pass this topic on to him.

Hi ChickenCanoe - I noticed you have a crosses with Jaerhons and a Penedesenca rooster. I'm real interested in how they turned out and if they are laying as well as purebred Jaerhons, and if their eggs are brown. The reason is because I have one very nice Wheaten Penedesenca rooster and a couple of Jaerhons also. I like our Jaerhons a lot. They have turned out to be our favorite breed. They are so friendly and such efficient and superior layers (much better than our brown leghorns) and do great in our situation. Our little flock is free ranging on our pasture and property without protection all day, and then back safely into the coop at night. I became interested in the Penedesencas because they are smaller, lay dark brown eggs, are great foragers, and I think pretty good at escaping predators. Our rooster seems pretty smart. Although I want to get more Jaers, I was also thinking our Penedesenca rooster x Jaerhons might make a good cross for us. Thankfully, we have Speckled Sussex hen that turned out to be a great brooder/mother. What do you think?

i saw someone ask if the chicks are a lil smaller, mine are now smaller but i think it's because they hatched from some of the very first eggs that my girls started laying. small egg=small chick another observation i made last year was as they mature they will be smaller chicks than others breeds. normally they hatch out same size chicks as other breeds with the same size egg but dont get as large and grow in size as other standard breeds.

Hello iahills! I am not real well-versed in genetics, but I can tell you the down color on the dark variety adults is gray. From pics of last summer's chicks, their down is gray-tan. I'll find a pic here...

i have an extra rooster for free in one of my jaer pens he's not a cull, he's a nice dark variety roo! local pick up only. apparently having only two in a pen with 7 hens is a bad idea. i'm just going to have one per pen for now.

I love how rich Omro's saddle feathering is. He is one month older than the others I hatched, but he is filling out the best and is the nicest looking. Some of the other cockerals from the Sept hatch are kinda runty; I chalk that up to being too late in the season for WI.

How did your Penedesenca club get started? Do you have a website for the club? Some of us want a club but don't know how to proceed.

Thank you aurissavannahs, I'm looking forward to seeing him fully developed. I think my adult roo Norrie's plumage was rather washed out in that pic; I went back and looked at some more recent ones and he has much more color. The pic I posted was taken not long before the flock molted.

Roosterfry, good to know about having only one roo per pen. I was wondering if it would be wise to put both of mine together with only 6 hens. I believe I will put the young one in with the laying flock for the breeding season.
