We did have chickens long ago, back in the 70's- they were our children's pets, really. After 25 years in Humboldt County and 36 adopted senior greyhounds, I am back in Southern CA with a little home of my own. Costly as property is here, near the beach, I have 3/4 of an acre running right along the freeway, with a little fenced and artificially turfed yard, and a narrow cement patio where one of my neighbor's chickens has decided to nest. She's evidently sneaking in daily (I've never seen her come or go) but the nest of 4 eggs I discovered under big leaves last week, has become 10.
No, I don't have intentions of raising chickens. But I don't have the heart to eat her eggs as my neighbor suggested- this hen has gone to a lot of trouble to find this secluded place, avoiding his large, free-range flock. She is mostly black- I can tell she's on the nest when I can't see her white eggs through the leaves. I've never seen this chicken (second picture) in my yard- could this be the broody with my Honey and the Feather Footed Fart who harasses him?
I am learning a lot from conversations on your site and will visit a feed store today to look into feeders and water-ers she'll need if she decides to sit- and that the chicks will need later. I called my husband who lives 4 miles up the road and evidently we still have a greyhound sized wire kennel that would work for the family after hatching, I think. I really worry that a possum will find her eggs. <gulp>
I also have one favorite rooster, Honey, who hangs out on my wooden fence and scratches around in the big freeway field before returning in the afternoon. "Honey, I'm home!" The top of that fence is even with my kitchen window so we talk regularly. But a little Feather-Footed-Fart has begun harassing him on a daily basis- what's with THAT? He has lots of other roosters he could annoy. I wish he'd go home. "Lock him UP!"
I don't think there is much you can do for me now that hasn't already been said in your forums and I intend to read ALL of the conversations. Just wanted you to know I really appreciate having found BackYard Chickens!
