Not a predator - rather a killer!

I agree, owls are notorious for just eating the head (or part of the back) and leaving everything else. Most other night predators will try to drag the bird away if they can.

Sorry about your loss of that gorgeous bird.

I lost 15 astrolops in one night to a weasel. It was the most horrible site when I went out to open the door of the hutch. Everyone of them had their head eaten off. I did catch it the next night coming back for more.

Gardeningsis, I am so sorry! That would be a horrible thing to see. I checked our game cam again this afternoon and saw a sweet little deer a bit past the fence. We have some lovely wildlife as well as the little creeps. Desertdarlene, thanks for your sympathy. She was a sweet little personality. Anyhoo, girls, you are both up way past my bedtime. I imagine that is the only time you have peace and quiet! oxoxo Caroline

I lost one girl to a GHO this fall when they migrated through. I have an eight foot chaing link fence covered in mesh wire, but the Owl got in and did enter the coop through a small door I left open because it was still really warm. All my ladders were knocked over. Took the head, left the rest. Next spring I am covering the whole thing! I am glad we don't have possums here! I think we will invest in a trail cam also..great idea!

We had pictures earlier of a 'possum, but deleted them. We had also detected a raccoon on the other side of the fenced area. Here he is now on the inside of the fenced area, but can't get through to the "patio"! It is totally enclosed (sides buried in the dirt and top covered) with chicken wire. We will continue to close up our girls at dusk and will also keep on eye on wire repair!

Great picture! I just wanted to mention that raccoons can also open latches to gates......they have great dexterity in their hands. It looks like you just have a slide bolt and the piece of wood that turns. It's not likely that he will figure out both those, but it is possible and he has great motive to try. He's been rewarded once by going in there, and he knows that is the doorway.

I latch my coop door with two snaps so nothing but us humans can open it.

That is an amazing camera, isn't it? 4love, I love that angry "smilie"! CorgiHouse, I will take your advice and place another slider lock. That one is hard to slide just now 'cause we are wet and the wood is swollen - that won't always be the case.
