Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

We could hope, but you what what they say about denial, lol. What worries me is that I'm not bothered by the death of my animals the way I used to be, it's like a numbness. Forgot to mention that today I buried a Marek's rooster, an ascites hen, two chicks and three ducklings.

I know what you mean....I have been able to 'remove' myself from most of it. Most of the time. How can you not? When your tolls are into the hundreds, you had better toughen up or you'll go so far around the bend you won't be coming back. Sometimes my 'sick' humor comes out to make it through. It just sucks.

You know, you brought up something Kathy that bothers me no end. I can't bury the birds here. I dont dare. We've talked about building an incinerator but haven't been able to do it yet. My ducks I do bury, but not the chickens or turkeys. Even digging way down and using quick lime...I just don't dare with the amount of deaths I've had here. We've used a dumpster from a company that takes anything and it is taken to an incinerator and burned for energy. heartbreaking, but the best I can do.

so it is a virus that causes cancer. hmmmm....

I remember something about a human virus that causes cancer. a venereal disease?
I remember it because they had made a vaccine for it that there was a lot of discussion about the ethicality of vaccinating teenagers for a venereal disease instead of assuming abstinence.

no real point. just a flash of memory.

Yes,Gardasil is the drug that is given, helps to prevent HPV (Human Papillomavirus). Marek's seems to me to be a combination of HPV/Chicken pox/Shingles which are all part of the herpes type family of diseases, and some cause cancer. Interesting enough over 1/2 the women with cervical cancer also have herpes type 2. Just doing some investigating, but now i'm wondering how vaccine for HPV would affect Marek's,or even the Chicken pox vaccine. Just curious if any studies have been done.

Sad to say, probably not. I did find this link today but need someone a lot smarter than I am or a whole bunch of time to look things up to understand everything they are talking about. I only have rudimentary chemistry under my belt. Someone explains it, I get it and don't forget.

The sad thing about this stuff is we are no one in the eyes of the pharmaceutical companies. We aren't large producers and our needs are small so we aren't heard. Kinda like an annoying mosquito, lol. They know we're there, but if you call them, I call them, or any of us call them...we are still a single voice to them. It's too bad we can't do something here on BYC where we could lobby or something. I don't know...just something.

HPV-Gardasil (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine

Some people should not get HPV vaccine or should wait.

  • Anyone who has ever had a life-threatening allergic reaction to any component of HPV vaccine, or to a previous dose of HPV vaccine, should not get the vaccine. Tell your doctor if the person getting vaccinated has any severe allergies, including an allergy to yeast.
  • HPV vaccine is not recommended for pregnant women. However, receiving HPV vaccine when pregnant is not a reason to consider terminating the pregnancy. Women who are breast feeding may get the vaccine.
Any woman who learns she was pregnant when she got this HPV vaccine is encouraged to contact the manufacturer’s HPV in pregnancy registry at 800-986-8999. This will help us learn more about how pregnant women respond to the vaccine.
  • People who are mildly ill when a dose of HPV vaccine is planned can still be vaccinated. People with a moderate or severe illness should wait until they are better.

I wonder if this disclaimer about giving it to pregnant women has anything to do with it. It sounds to me as if it has residuals that we might not want in our food supply. Just a guess...

Some of the ovarian and lung cancers as well. There are some that think all cancers are caused by herpes viruses that we may not even recognize yet. My doctor is one of them. Now, if this is the case, maybe the old timers who thought that cancer was a catching disease weren't that far off. Scary stuff huh?

Interestingly enough, it was the study of Marek's disease in poultry and the development of a vaccine for it that led to the development of cancer vaccines for humans. Marek's vaccine was the first effective cancer vaccine for any species.

my husband's best friend died when he was 35 from a virus that attacked his heart and caused an arrhythmia. they were talking about putting him on a pacemaker but hadn't done it yet when one morning he went into cardiac arrest.

Nambroth, do you have any links on that? That doesn't surprize me one bit! It's funny how these things work and usully all it takes is thinking outside the box now and then. If I remember correctly...Newcastle vaccine is another one they are testing for human cancer treatment. Haven't looked at that in a while though so no idea where the testing is right now.

I've been asked to take part in a 'show and tell' for chickens and am thinking about having information on Marek's. So many people have no clue what it is and why they should vaccinate against it. I thought this may be a way of getting it out there. Since it was the TSC manager who approached me and one of his employees putting it together, it should draw people in. Here's the email below. That's why I am asking about any links you might have about the cancer, ect.. In fact I'd welcome anything anyone had. I'd like this as well rounded as possible so it will be something people can understand and realize it could be them.

Hi Deb,

On July 13th we are hosting a "Backyard Poultry" outreach event at the store from 10 - 2.

Wondering if you want to take part? Thinking a couple information workshops under the pop-up tents then a show or swap type event. I was thinking you and Tricia for the workshops but open to any and all ideas for the day.

If you're game I'll connect you and Tricia so we can plan more.

Thanks!

Clark
