Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

does oxine kill mareks?
No, not plain Oxine. I've found most people on the forum use it without activating it. They're just wasting their money, oxine won't kill ANYthing unless you activate it with the crystals.
I looked far and wide and dug through all kinds of .pdf's and couldn't find a single document that said plain un-activated Oxine killed anything. People left and right keep swearing it works like magic on everything from parvo to hemorrhoids. Not un-activated it doesn't. Activated? Yes.
Sorry, pet peeve of mine lol

And you are absolutely right! Plain, it does have disinfectant properties, as it is a formulation of 'bleach', but not the kind to kill Marek's. For that you absolutely have to add the citric acid and it becomes deadly to Marek's, you, anything in it's path.

ok, thanks. i'm wondering about the stuff Seminole uses, Vikron or Oxine. - which to buy.

also - I am now down to 5 chickens. 3 d'uccles, 2 silkies. Since I have known mareks, should I continue vitamins and extra b in their water to help keep them stronger? or maybe just vitamins?

I have wondered on here why people think Oxine works unactivated. It does not.
Virkon says it kills Marek's specifically on the label. It's a commercial product that is used to disintect Poultry houses and stables. Through a lot of reading, I like it because it's the only one that mentions porous surfaces like wood. When ever I change shavings, I spray everything down with it. Walls ceilings, floors.

Schnebbles, I find every little bit helps. Also electrolytes in the summer and preventing them from heat stroke.

Hey Haunted! Glad to see you back. You need to be here! LOL

I got a question. I have a nice coop made out of 1/2 the shed with fencing inside blocking them from the other side. If I spray with Virkon, the other side of the shed never gets sprayed because the stuff shouldn't get wet. So I wonder if keeping my Polish in a coop that only half can be sprayed. What do I do?

Thank you for this information-- I had them listed in the FAQ and specified activated oxine, but I went back and added a note to make it extra clear.
I have researched Virkon since it was mentioned and I think it might be the best option if all else is equal!
I also added your FAQ as somehow I forgot it earlier!

What is the material that shouldn't get wet?

Seminole - thanks - my vitamins have electrolytes so I'll just continue giving them water mixed with that and vitamin b, maybe for winter to hopefully keep them strong and resistant.

Jennifer - you could also add firststatevetsupply to the places you can get vaccine. that's where I got mine. He does currently have issues with the website, apparently certain browsers don't cooperate but I called and got it. I didn't read the whole mareks page you wrote, but it looked nice!

that is up to you. The Bs will help with their immune system especially the Super B Complex. That has the addition of the vitamin C and we all know how important that is in retaining over all and tissue and nerve health. Unfortunately it isn't a cure for Marek's. Support, but not cure.
