Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

So sorry you guys... Maybe it's that time of year? 'cause I've got a few that are looking iffy, one with ocular changes that spends most of the days in the bushes, a young stunted one that been yawing non-stop, and the one that walk like her legs are tied together... Then of course there's the one that just died, that's the one that went from drunk looking to unable to stand a a couple of days. FWIW, it seems like I lost a few around this time last year, too.

Again, sorry for your losses and your sick birds.

You too Kathy. Hey...it happens, we know this. Doesn't make it easier, but it is to be expected. Mine is being brought on by the stress of new birds in the house, but I can't change that unfortunately. I hate the thought of losing Audry cause she is one of my Ameraucanas and one of my favorites as well.

Schnebbles, The 3 hens in question were from the same group that was vaccinated. The 2 roos from that group are fine so far. They are all about 1.5 yrs old !!!!! My Tolbunt roo looks fine, crowed this morning, but I tried to catch him and after a minute he just sat down and let me.

Yes, I think spring and fall are frequently those times. They've had no stress in the past months.
I think I'm going to get geese in the spring. Maybe just end up eventually with a few chickens.
I'm not going to use the one shed after this. This stuff makes you paranoid, doesn't it?

I go out tonight to lock up and my one Polish girl is hanging upside down in the netting over their new pen. Caught by a toenail. She's fine. Sorry you guys, for having a bad time of it too.

yes All vaccinatd at day 1 of life.. I had a hatch of 7 Polish. Vaccinated x2. On the 2nd vaccination, a hatch of 5got a vaccine. Out of the first 7, 5 died from opportunistic bacterias, 2 survived. One of them lived in my bdrm for 6 weeks because she had paralysis , but recovered. The hatch of the latter 5, 3 hens are dying , symptomatic, and looking to be symptomatic. The 2 roos are well.

There is also a roo from another member that was with them, a survivor of Marek's. All these I speak of are 1.5-2 years old. Right now I divided them up.
4 older gals, all 5-6 years old.
1 eight month old resistant roo and 2 hens that are almost 2 years old. Look good.
1 iffy roo, 1 symptomatic hen, one looking to be symptomatic. An 2x vaccinated hen that lived in my bdrm for 6 weeks and recovered from paralysis, over a year ago.
I want to take her out of there, but don't know where to put her.
These are my Polish that I had high hopes for.

altogether, 5 roos, and 10 hens. 1 more hen dying in my bathroom. I may help her to heaven in the mornng, and maybe the other paralysis victim as well.
Oh yea, one vaccinated hatchery hen, 2 years old, a wyandotte, slept all day yesterday.
They are all seriously molting. That could be their stressor.

Seminole...stop it! Seriously, I found my BLW hen hanging upside down from a light cord tonight. I am not sure what i will find this morning. I got her down and rubbed her leg but when she was set down she couldn't walk so I put her into a nest box for the night. I am so hoping she's alright as she's the only BLW hen I have left.

Seminole was explaining that for me.

Haunted, do you think she has mareks? Or just managed to get tangled? Hope she's ok.

Sometimes I think I shouldn't have gotten any chickens but I sure love having them. I think the worst thing is that you just can never get rid of it no matter what. No matter when you vaccinate, they can still get it. I was hoping Seminole had vaccinated these birds later in life which was why so many are showing symptoms now. I wouldn't even feel safe vaccinating chicks in my house since I've had 3 mareks birds in here. Our house is not real big and I wouldn't trust it not to be everywhere in here too.

sigh...

I'm so sorry about all of these I'm reading about :(

My Polish, the oldest are 3 buff sisters. One of them has hung herself upside down 3 times, nails caught in wire pen. This one just once. Not the sharpest nails in the box.

I dispatched 2 this morning. The one dying I had put her in my bathroom last night, still alive this morning, gasping. The other one has been sleeping with her head in her feathers, skinny, and walks a bit, then sits down. RIP. I will still have chickens, but just a few.

Yes, Schnebbles, I have really had enough. So, they will dwindle themselves down. Last night I called Nava who has some Sebastopol geese for sale, and we are going up to see them this evening. One of her male geese gets in her lap. He steals her cell phone too.
I hope someone has a kiddy pool local.

I can't incubate anymore. I get left with too many roosters that I can't rehome. So I'll be selling my incubator. I'll keep my cheapy for goose eggs.

I'm sorry Seminole

Do you think that when you vaccinated that there was any chance of the mareks being in the house or wherever you vaccinated?

I've seen those geese, they are cool looking!

I'm sorry this awful disease has put you off chickens. I understand, though. It's crushing to have them die and die.

I think you will like the Sebastopol geese. I have heard nothing but good things about them being full of personality and often very friendly. A friend has one that "thinks he's people".

Thankyou for the shoulders. As far as the vaccine goes, who knows. As far as quarantine? They were in the house for 3 weeks then in a chick hutch on the patio for 4 weeks. We were careful to wash our hands, handle them very little , and clean up their brooder first before we would go out in the morning for the rest. They didn't even get the shavings. I kept their shavings separate. I guess there could be Marek's in the house, but I have other Polish that were vaccinated prior to hatching the last 2 batches and they are fine too. Two went to heaven and 3 are left from that batch. The wasting Polish roo that I got in the mail from another Marek's person looks to be putting on weight.

I'm not giving up on chickens. Just will not add any for a while. I have 30 right now, and won't add. I can't give up chickens entirely!!! Nothing like a chicken.

We ran up to another BYC member's house and came back with a pair of Sebastapol geese. Gray, 2 years old. So sweet. Boy do they go to the bathroom a lot! I think we just needed some happy in our backyard.
