Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

Farmgirl, to be honest it sounds as if the bird had a bad case of Gleet and maybe Marek's. Not sure about that. The classic front and back leg make me think so but without seeing the overall, I can't be sure. I agree with Seminole, check to see that the feed is good, your birds havent been exposed to some kind of pesticide or sucjh and give them a good poultry probiotic in either their water or sprinkled on their feed.

I have 2 more limpers. One is vaccinated. One is from resistant parents. One is limping bad, one mild. There's a 3rd bird in there that looks healthy and is plump. Should I take her out?

dang it, seminole, that just makes me sick.

Haunted, that's a good idea to check the commonness in my breed for wry. I'm giving her vitamin e and low dose prednisone. She isn't well :( Tonight I thought she was gone. I had put her on the deck this morning so she'd be there with the others and have the heated water bowl. I found her sleeping behind the coop on the ground. I have brought her inside now. I have not seen her walk really, but she managed to get to the spot she was sleeping which was down the deck steps and all the way around coop. I bet she couldn't get up to get in the coop. depressing...

Nambroth, I couldn't find anything either.

So very, very sorry to read about you guys having so much trouble lately. The weather turning and the stress of molting really seems to kick the legs out from a lot of our birds!

I have been watching my two new cochin kids while holding my breath. They were raised on a clean farm about an hour away, and vaccinated at hatch and then again about 3 weeks later. I didn't start exposing them until after 3 months old. I just dearly hope they make it; they are super sweet birds.

I'm trying nutritional yeast loaded with B vitamins.
I may try something else. I worked with a world renowned doctor who found that coconut oil slowed and somewhat reversed Alzheimers for a good amount of time. I asked her about my dog with seizures. She said 1tsp per 10 pounds. It started to reduce the number of seizures after 3-4 months. It's cut his episodes down by 50%. Dog's been on it for 1.5 years now. From what I gather, coconut oil "coats" the nerve endings . I wonder if it would help wry neck?

I'm sorry, Schnebbles.

thank you.

do you get it at the grocery or health food store?

Thanks so much for your replies, I really appreciate it. I'm pretty sure it's not the feed. I don't give them scraps, and they get a freshly ground feed from a local mill that I know is nutritionally balanced. I thought I would be able to do a necropsy but she got thrown away before I had a chance. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if any other girls have symptoms. Thanks for your help!
