Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

Good luck on the farrier endeavor!  I think it's good to try what you want to.

so, your husband has seizures?  and he takes coconut oil for them?  how much does he take?  I know people who have children with seizures.

I put some in Priscilla's food mix just a bit ago.  She's not eating at all :(  Have to make sure I get a lot more in her via tube.  I keep hoping wry neck improves, since I read it can.  Can't have her wasting away in the mean time tho.

I love this board, people who can relate to the bad things that happen.  My husband doesn't quite understand, he knows it upsets me but he's one who would say it's a chicken...well, I love them all because they are chickens!

how do you give them coconut oil?  if you put in the water will they even get any?

no my dog has seizures.. The dose is a tsp per 10 lbs, But start real small because it can make diahrrea. My dog gets it in his food. The doctor just used it like butter on humans, I don't know the dose for humans.

Kathy, I would be happy to trim your toenails, LOL
How do you tube feed a goose? I got a 3 year old pair a few weeks ago. They went from a grass diet to a pellet diet with treats. Hubby is going to get them romaine etc. tomorrow. Right now they get flock pellets and grass hay bale. The male is wide eyed and bushy tailed, friendly , looking good. The female seems to be lethargic, squinty eyed, does drink and bathe in the pool. Does eat a bit but not much, and has green runny poo. Very light. They can't be sick from other geese. I don't know if they ever had grain, but the male eats well. So it may come to tube feeding or a vet.

Re- subscribing to this thread, had to make a new account. I'm going to be calling the GA lab to do some test on my birds ( blood tests) is there any way for them to test for mareks with throat swabs and blood samples? If so, I'll definitely pay the extra for that test.

I have never had a chicken get Mareks, but the chickens I have that I hatched under broodys aren't vaccinated. Would it be too late to vaccinate 3 month old chicks? I have been told it has to be done on day 1.

Yes, it's probably too late, they have most likely already been exposed if it's in your area. You can try, but there's no proof that it will do anything.

GA is where I had various PCR tests run via blood sample, so yes. You'll probably just have to call them and ask when, where, and how to get it to them. It was pretty expensive. Texas A&M might cost less, I'm not sure. It's worth checking into.

. I thought the Marek's test at Texas was under $20. I'm really tired of people trying to wring every last dollar out of people with sick chickens! You would think it would be free to test for Marek's and add it to their research.

My supermarket offered walk in flu shots. I went. My insurance didn't cover it. $27.00. I'll be if I went to a dr's office and got it they would pay alot more. They are so stupid.

I think it's around $30/sample at Texas A&M. I'm not sure, their page hasn't been updated in a while. I have a link to them and GA in my FAQ. On top of this you would need to pay for the proper shipping of a sample via overnight or 2-day in an insulated container, like human blood samples. In all, if you collect the blood yourself and have the appropriate collection vial to ship it, it would probably cost around $50-60. Maybe someone else can chime in with their costs?? Mine were a bit different, because the vet pulled the sample and mailed it for me, and they worked some sort of a deal because GA was very interested in my specific case. They also tested mine for ALV (Lymphoid Leukosis) and ran several other diagnostics via tissue sample, so what I paid is not necessarily what others would pay. I just wanted the best answers I could get, and it cost me.

I wish it was eaiser and less expensive, too. PCR testing is, unfortunately, a bit specialized and isn't as simple as running a culture or doing a swab... :(
