Not an injury; 'Tag' on chick's jaw.

An interesting parallel - I was just noticing, looking through the pictures, that the tag seems to be about the same length as the chick's beak, from the tip to the start of the nares, in each picture.

No problem at all. I'm thinking that if this grows too large, and becomes a problem, I should be able to trim it back similar to trimming an overgrown beak or toenail. I would certainly be keeping styptic powder on hand for that, though, if it comes to pass.

It looks like end of the tag is going to open like a feather shaft. It could just be the picture but it’s a tad lighter then the rest.

If it does, I'll be sure to post about it with photos. I'm not sure it's not just scuffed, from feeding and playing - I didn't examine the tip too closely. As hot as it is, I'm trying to minimize disturbances and make them as short as possible... whenever I go out they get excited and run around, then get overheated and melt all over the containers of ice again. It's just too hot. All the other birds are sprawled on containers of ice or hosed-down patches of dirt (mud) as well.

Boy, hard to say what kind of problem it might become and how to trim or remove it safely.
The fact that it's growing so fast would make me lean towards removing it now,
but to DIY it could be risky...who knows how deep that group of cells is embedded.
Tough call.

I want to give it a little longer before making the call. If it continues to grow so fast, I may have to go ahead and remove it - I don't want it to interfere with the chick's ability to thrive. But I also want to see how it develops if left alone... so it's a tough call, indeed.

Update on the 10th, rather than the 11th.

The growth parallel between the tag and the beak seems to be continuing. The beak has slowed its growth now, and the tag appears to have done the same. I believe the white spot at the end is just from rubbing on things when the chick eats and plays. It's hard and smooth, with no sign of feather eruption. I'm still watching it, though.

Egg set 6-6-18, Hatched 6-27-18.

Weight on 6-27-18: 33 grams.
Weight on 6-30-18: 38 grams. Five gram gain.
Weight on 7-04-18: 54 grams. Sixteen gram gain.
Weight on 7-07-18: 68 grams. Fourteen gram gain.
Weight on 7-10-18: 81 grams. Thirteen gram gain.

Amazing how fast they grow.
