Not an injury; 'Tag' on chick's jaw.

Much better result than you anticipated, so that’s excellent! Congrats.
And thanks for the info on the cracked one. Lots of folks use different things, so I’m always interested in things that actually work. :)

I suspect that the important ingredient was the 3% Hydrogen Peroxide bath. I just stick a spray end into a $2 Walmart bottle, and spray the eggs down, then let them dry before I set them. I've read a few studies that indicated a better hatch rate from it, and both of the times that I've used it, I had very good fertility despite the eggs being shipped. Unfortunately, the first time I had incubator problems - the incubator died shortly after the hatch - and this time, I live in hell. I really miss temperatures below 100 F.

Have you ever thought about building a swamp cooler? AZ should be the perfect place to build one. You just need humidity below 50% to have one that really works.

Swamp coolers are incredibly popular here. Eastern Nevada/Western Utah area. I hate them with a passion.. one of the reasons I moved here was a severe allergy to mold, after being sick for a year with constant bronchitis and pneumonia before it was discovered that the place I was living had black mold inside the walls. I like the low humidity, just hate the heat and desolation! However, a swamp cooler wouldn't have fared any better, since it still would have been disabled when the power was shut off, and would be just as likely to fail as the AC was. It would just make things wetter, and the other main reason I moved here is that I have bad arthritis, which goes nuts... in a humid climate.

Gotcha. I know of people who prefer a dry cooling system, but have a swamp cooler system ready to go if their main AC system dies. They would rather be moist than hot.

Edited to add: They have battery back up for their essentials in case the power goes out and swamp coolers can be run with little power.

Hmm... the swamp coolers I'm familiar with around here suck as much power as an AC... I have the house on a backup generator, but it requires a manual start. Since I wasn't home, and didn't find out about the problem either time until I GOT home (Power company got a VERY nasty phone call from me about notifying their customers before shutting the power off...) it didn't get started.

The ones I've seen were ones designed to run on low power, specifically for off grid/unreliable utilities situations.

Five weeks old today. Looking very much like a cockerel.

About 3/16 of an inch in length, so about 1/16 of an inch growth since breaking. It's slowing down, and the coloration is a direct match for the beak. This chick has the fluffiest 'chaps' of the eight.
