Not bumblefoot?

Our roo started limping badly a few days back and it hasn't gotten better so we decided to check him out. My wife is an RN. She saw no evidence of bumble foot as we understand it from web searches. She did see evidence of a portal of entry, a tiny black cut on foot. The pad was about double the size of the other foot and was not hot or red. She did a deep palpation and the pad felt tight with no evidence of a hard kernel. She lanced the pad and no pus came out. We bandaged him up and returned him to his ladies. Any ideas what might be going on here?

His middle toe looks swollen as well as the footpad. It could be sprained or broken, or the this is just very early signs of bumblefoot. How does the other foot look?
