Not dead yet - heat sickness? help

Quote "Trying to get one of my daughters to come out here around midday to pull the dogs in and let the chickens loose. One doesn't have time, the other 2 are pretending they didn't get my text. "

These kids! Try texting them "one day you'll need me, and I'll remind you of this". I'm sure you can think of some snarky things to say/text to them. They all have buttons-push one. They certainly know how to push your buttons!

Hope your hen stays well.

Oh yea, I freeze big chunks of ice in rubbermaid containers and put them in the waterer every day. That cold water really helps them alot.

Fortunately I don't need their help very often anymore. And that list of no's, well it has already influenced my decision to allow them to move themselves, or drive my truck (not loan it out) and not pack it either. And a host of other motherly services. Rarely do I need help that involves livestock, and I will be working out options that will let me be away for a weekend without depending on daughters.

What I have done is put out shallow pans of ice cold well water, filled a kiddie pool full of that same ice cold well water and had it sitting in a shady area in the backyard. When it got really hot (heat index of 115 which is very unusual for MN) they would lay against the pool under the rim of it to cool down, worked like a charm. I also always put vitamins and electrolytes in their waterers when it gets to be extreme like that.
