Ok, so we had a severe heat wave in Northern Ca. I lost one hen during this. My New Hampshire, either has not recovered, or has a completely different problem. Her back end is swollen red. She has a green white streaked fluid running out. She’s not eating. I did put on glove and go into her back end to see if she was egg bound. I did not feel anything except hot. But I’m very concerned. She is walking around,
To be cautious we gave her 4 rounds of cortaid,
But I don’t think this is coccidiosis, been through that, no other hens are sick. If she’s broody she’d be nesting I think. She’s not laying though either. Just so you know, I’m not new at this. I’ve had chickens for 4 years, I know the basics.
Thanks for any feedback

Can you post any pictures of her back end? Is she eating and drinking? I would offer her some watery chicken feed, a little cooked egg or tuna. Is she molting? How does her crop feel? Does it empty overnight?

Is veterinary care an option?

Have you ever treated for external parasites or internal parasite aside from coccidia that you mention? Or had a fecal float to check for them? While mature birds are likely to have good resistance to the coccidia on their own ground (and in the dry heat (wave) of northern California should really be far from consideration for an experienced keeper), worms are a whole other story.

Some mites or lice infestations can cause the angry red swollen skin. But the green and white fluid is a clue in another direction.

Sounds like you *could* be dealing with EYP.. egg yolk peritonitis (internal laying), vent gleet, or ascites.

Is her crop.. full and squishy, hard with something in there, or flat? Is she drinking at all? What effects the hind end often also effects the front end and vice versa. They help give us clues.

Pictures or video may be helpful.

Is she still passing waste? When was her last egg? (question regarding possible EYP instead of binding).. which was a good thing to rule out.

What supportive care is she getting? Feed routine, supplements?

When a bird has gone off feed (and/or water).. poultry nutri drench can be a great supplement to administer for a quick immune system boost and pick me up.. patented for rapid absorption does not require digestion to work. Administered just below the nostrils (if they won't drink), they will swallow when it roll around into their mouth!

Hope this helps with some ideas and that she recovers quickly! :fl
