Hello from an aspiring poultry person.
Being one of those crazy would-be off-grid homesteaders has been a bit of a dream of mine for quite some years now and I'm finally getting a real start on it. In the coming summer, I'm going to have a proper garden (not pots on a patio) and I'll be getting started with some smaller livestock... specifically a few assorted laying hens.
As I am in-the-mean-time holed up in an apartment on the other side of the country from where I'm comfortable, I opted to pick up a pair of tiny two-week old button quails to keep me company. While I'm not new to birds, the species I'm familiar with are all zygodactylous (except perhaps for the flightless rescue pigeon who also shares my home). These things are something rather new to me, and are, rather, more like 'starter chickens'.
Seeing as this place seems to have a pretty decent community of fellow quail owners, and considering my plans to keep chickens in the future anyways (and ideally, a variety of gamebird and rabbit, as well), I figured I might as well join the ranks.
