I think I massaged her daily for a few days then kind of gave up when I didn't see improvement and only massaged every few nights when I checked them on the roost.Thank you for this! My next step was to try the stool softener without stimulant of courseIāve read that if they donāt drink enough water with this medicine they can die so I was nervous! I appreciate the help! My girl doesnāt have hay but could have eaten long grass. I also noticed during her molt so Iām not sure if that had anything to do with it. I appreciate the info! Iām hoping one day I wake and that crop is empty! Did you massage daily?
I am doing exact same thing⦠Iām going to try the stool softener. Youāve given me some hope!I think I massaged her daily for a few days then kind of gave up when I didn't see improvement and only massaged every few nights when I checked them on the roost.
I read some posts about people choking their chickens during massaging!![]()
I hope little Dandelion recovers!I am doing exact same thing⦠Iām going to try the stool softener. Youāve given me some hope!
Thank you! No hay here!...that's a different problem.
Sounds like what you're doing is working. Keep it up. IDK if yours have access to hay, but like @StinkyAcres said, it can cause impaction and my wife had me remove it all from the coop and run, at least as much as I could, when she heard about issues with it.
I feel like Dandelion is just like my gal biggie. Almost identical. She has good days and what seem like bad days. When molting a chicken loves the protein! Try a scrambled egg with the coconut just for her! Or, wet her feed with some water. Molting is really tough on some hens. I am new so i always assume a chicken not doing well is probably going to go downhill and die. The opposite has actually been true in the year and a half of having this flock! They are quit resilient little buggers. Because my gal is not laying either, i actually add water to some nonlayer feed with 18% protein and she loves it. I give it to her in AM and PM. She too, like yours has been a little less than enthusiastic about breakfast and dinner time. I weighed her yesterday so i have a reference if i think she has issues moving forward. Boy oh boy life is so much better when the flock is thriving, thats for sure. I wish you the best with dandelion. I call this flock my experimental b/c its my first. The coconut oil won't go rancid, it's actually mildly antibacterial. If you can, I'd try to get a tsp to a tbsp into her each time. That she's having solids in her droppings again is a very good sign, as well as seeing more normal behavior. I would give it a week and then see how she's doing. If it was a parasite issue, then it could take that long. If you want to give probiotics (human ones or animal ones) that might be helpful also to get the gut back in balance. You can empty a capsule, or mix the powder into a bit of moistened feed. Fingers crossed she continues to improve!
Awww thank you!! Biggie looks just like my Hazel! Iāll post a pic! I agree about life being better when flock is healthy! Itās always something but itās all worth it! Good luck with your first flock! This is my third year having chickens and Iāve learned so much and love them all so much! Biggie meet Hazel and Dandelion!
