Not laying but calling in the mornings

It sounds mostly like the first one.
So if seems like they are just simply calling (not crowing) - mine can hear us in the house when we wake up (dishes clanking, water running, chatting, etc.). I recommend to make sure they wake up to a full feed dish & fresh water, grass clippings to scratch around in, hanging greens etc. = something to keep them busy until you can get out there. My girl does that sound when she is bored & wants to come out. I only recommend leaving out feed/seed for the morning if your set-up is 100% hardware cloth so rodents aren't attracted to their breakfast overnight.

Are they the chickens in your avatar? Because if so, the coloration looks suspiciously rooish to me. Can you post pictures of the birds in question?

Nothing you can do to quiet a chicken who is up in the morning (other than to keep them in their coop until a decent time to minimize the impact on others). It's just their way, and most birds, the peak of their activity is mornings. Enjoy it (I do!).

Good point; they are pretty light for hens (ours is much darker, overall), though there is plenty of room for variation in strains. Yes, photos of the whole flock, particularly your noise maker, would be helpful.

Hi! I have a Lucy and Ethel team of chickens too! They are cuckoo marans.....19 weeks old, no eggs YET! Soon, I hope! ~Beulah

LOL! Must be popular names. I have - or should say "had" - two RSL's, Lucy and Ethel. Lost poor Ethel a few weeks ago. =(

My two BSL's are Thelma and Louise!

They become very vocal right when they are getting ready to lay.

How long does this go on before they finally deliver the "goods"? Aretha (BA) has a bright red comb and wattles, and has been extremely vocal for the last month, at least! No squatting, though. How long does this "warm up to the egg song" go on before they finally produce?
