Thank you so much for the replies! I think the layer feed I am feeding is 16%. Is there any reason why a higher protein % would be bad for them?

The Koi pellets are an interesting idea, as I feed those to my ducks - they LOVE them! The Wild Game feed is a good idea as well.

So is the bottom line that they need more protein when they are molting?

As I understand it, it's less about the protein % and more about them not being vegetarians by nature. Soy protein just doesn't have the same punch. Excessive protein has to be filtered and excreted so it's wasted and taxes their kidneys. You don't want to go too crazy but adding a little animal protein when they show signs of needing it seems prudent.
