I'm joining this site simply because most chicken people seem like a good bunch, so maybe I'm just a chicken owners' groupie. Anyone who would go to the trouble of actually writing about chickens, has to be a good egg (stop me there...). I don't have chickens, although they come and visit me from dawn to dusk 7/7. Five of them, all different breeds (I think. What do I know, I'm not a chicken profiler...). They are kept for laying eggs.

I don't have any useful info to help out others. All I know is what I observe from this group who spend most of their free time at my house. They are peaceful, and seem sweet. They help me to slow down and smell the roses from time to time. And they listen when I speak to them. As a matter of fact, they come around all the time to listen to me, although I'm running out of interesting things to tell them...

I found this site through a google search because I was curious to know why these chickens spend all day congregating at my front or back door (both glass doors), and occasionally venturing inside. They're fairly respectful, considering they are chickens, but they have poor control of bodily functions, so I try to keep them at a distance. It's an uphill battle. But I like everything about them (except the poop thing - I'm getting tired of that. And the ripping up of my plants, too. That needs to be addressed.). They just live their lives, taking care of what they have to, not asking for much, not taking much, and leaving a good impression. Once I got over the initial invasion and why it bothered me, I opened up to the pleasant surprise of getting to know chickens on a social level. For the time being, their "owners" are giving them free range whether or not it's their property, so if I can't beat 'em I might as well join 'em and make it fun enjoying their company (the chickens).

So, I'll keep quiet as my opinions are worth zip, beyond what I've written here, but I'll continue to enjoy your commentaries. Who know, maybe someday I'll have my own brood.

ps No roosters around, which seems to maintain a peaceful setting...

pps I live in France, so these are French hens.

Loved your intro! Sounds like you've discovered chicken tv, always a fun show and relaxing too. Chickens are interesting, glad you're enjoying the visitors!

Did you say French hens? Do they look like these? :gig

How did you know?! You've pegged the French "tough chick" look. We've tried to discourage the smoking, though...

ps My name is also Deb(orah) :)

Always nice to 'meet' another Deb (I'm a Debra). Good luck on the no smoking policy with the hens, they do seem to have a mind of their own though and enjoy their vices :p

Welcome to BYC! Hope you enjoy your time here! :pop

Thanks for the welcome, Flockandfowl46. What's not to enjoy - fowl play!

Oops, as I write this, a chicken has just cautiously entered into the living room (tiled floor). Seriously. Give them an inch, and the next thing will be they'll be asking to borrow the keys to the car... (Sorry, I'm usually not this ridiculous, but these creatures bring it out in me, and my human entourage is not nearly as funny).

You have just discovered ... and put into words ... the real joy of chickens. Plainly and simply, they bring out the FUN in us!
