Hi,

I used this forum when I had my first batch of hens, 10 years ago. Shortly after I got them (three years or so) - my life circumstances changed and the coop and girls went to a friend. My last hen, age 10, passed away last week, according to the friend. She'd survived two fox attacks.

I now have a new flock. They're nearly 6 weeks old and I've had them since they were a day old. I have a speckled sussex, columbian wyandotte, silver-laced wyandotte, blue laced Americauna, black astraulorp, buff orpington, and a cuckoo maran. I'm having their coop built as I type this - and 8x12 chicken apartment - since they won't be able to free range. I'm very excited to be back in the chicken game and want to give them the best life (yes, I know a free ranging life would be better than the enclosed life they will have....I'm doing my best here). I've asked some other questions on other forums related to that.

My latest stresses have been about the best food and waterer so if anyone has thoughts, let me know - but I know there are forums and I will check those out. Thank you

Alissa

Hiya, Alissa, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Our Learning Center has tons of articles like this full of ideas for you. https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/categories/feeders-waterers.26/

As for feed, we'll all recommend you feed your little ones starter that's high in protein until they are laying eggs or crowing, then a good layer feed.

I've personally been buying Kalmbach's for both starter and layer but most brands are fine.
