I think both pullets, but not 100% sure.

hi guys. I have a rainbow who's about 6 1/2 weeks old. it's always been a normal size chick but recently has became a lot larger than the others. it's also got a much bigger and redder comb and is starting to get wattles.

The rooster is a black marans. All my hatched chicks are black but the hatching eggs were different colors (green, blue, dark brown, pink). I was curious why the chicks are all black then asked the guy who sold the eggs. He said the rooster is a french black copper marans.
Black Copper is a red base color. He has no silver gene to pass on. Therefore, the black chick with silver patterning, must have gotten the silver color from it's mother. A silver hen can only pass that silver on to her male chicks. The first chick must be male, according to the basic genetic rules for sexlinking.

When I purchased my chickens, I thought they were all pullets. We have been suspecting that this one is actually a rooster for some time. Can anyone confirm this?

Lol. Exactly how I feel... I don't have the genetic smarts... talk about genetics is like... well... trying to climb a mountain without climbing gear or knowing what I'm doing. That is the only example I could come up with

I love sexlinked genes. Makes life so much easier when you don't have to wait around for combs to start pinking up. I am not an expert yet, when it comes to genetics, but I have a pretty good grasp of the basics. Much of it still confuses and baffles me.

Hey guys! New chicken owner and new to BYC. Trying to figure out if my 5 week old EE's are pullets or roos. I've got three pics of each:

Chick #1 (roo?)

Chick #2 (pullet?)

Chick #3 (roo?)

Chick #4 (pullet?)

Chick #5 (roo...) :( But he sure does take pretty pictures!

Chick #6 (pullet?) She's the runt of the group.

Thanks so much for your help guys! Gotta figure out how many of these I need to replace since we can't keep roosters.
