Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

Thanks for the info, here are the pictures of the parents, guessing pullet then.

That chick did not come from that particular pairing. The rooster might be the father, but that hen is not the mother. The chick is solid black, with barring. Just not possible from those two parents. And the rooster has a single barring gene. There is no way to sex by the usual rules for barring. That hen has no barring gene at all.

These are definitely the parents of the chick, no doubt about that as she was the only hen laying and he is our only cockerel. Our other two hens are identical so it wouldn't matter anyway.

I'm not going to argue over it but the fact is that this chick came from those two as those are the only birds it could possibly be and as i said the other hens are identical anyway. Here are some pictures of the other chicks from this pair if that helps.

Have you, at any point in the last 3 months, had a different rooster or cockerel? The black chicks are not possible with the stated parents. The black pattern gene is the most dominant of all pattern genes. It does not hide. It simply is not possible. Neither of your claimed parents are black. They can not produce a black chick. They do not have the genes required to produce such chicks.

We have had no other cockerel for at least a year so I don't know what else to say! We hatched our current cockerel which was more or less identical to this chick. We will just have to watch and see but thank you.
